Due to a total lack of interest, we have most unfortunately missed the deadline for the visit on the 12th of October for the GWR steam train trip plus lunch aboard. This would have been our very own Orient Express for the day. If you guys want your Region to arrange events, we need your commitment. Waiting until a few days before to see what the weather will be like is sadly not good enough. []

Yes it is pretty disheartening for Club officials to organise events that are at best, badly supported and at worst, members ringing up the night before to get their name on the list. But it was ever thus!

Dont despair Derek, it happens in PCI as well. We put on good events which we think will really suit members to have the same result as you, and then they moan cos we dont have enough events. If I lived in the UK I'd be at all your rerions events .

Derek, I'm trying to help. I asked the question as I honestly hadn't noticed the event being publicised (my reasons why below.)

A dedicated thread on the forum might have flagged up the event and possibly received more interest? The Region 31 Events sticky hasn't been updated since April 2013 - which means many members wouldn't have seen it due to the different ways people view updates to the forum.

My experience in marketing for major corporations proves that one can't assume that anyone sees any one piece of advertising and acts on it right away. It needs a media-wide strategy to get maximum exposure.

Personally I flick through PP when I get time. It's my 'passive' way of reading about club happenings - not 'active', meaning I'm not usually in a position to respond or react immediately to information in the pages.

Unfortunately I can't participate in regional club meetings as I'm usually on the road traveling back from client meetings when other members are enjoying a pint in the pub.

The forum is my main avenue into the club and I tend to be very active here "" but on every visit I click 'posts since last visit' and catch up on what's happened since my last visit. The GWR event didn't appear on my radar as the events thread hadn't been updated since April. Sadly I didn't see it "" and, as I've said, I'm one of the active forum participants "" which means a great many others members of the region probably won't have seen it either.

It's sad that the event hasn't been supported. I hope you have more success in securing support for future events next year.

Hi Rich,

No worries. Pity about the event as it promised to be a cracker. Su & I did a dry run last year and it was a hoot.

I'm not sure what I can do to advertise events. They are published in PP every month and on the Forum (where they stay so all you have to do is to read a thread entitled 'Events'! [:D]).

Sort of emailing everyone individually, not much else I can do.

Whatever, it is annoying when a good event is not supported, even more annoying when members ring up on the eve of the event to try to book when the list closed weeks previously (comments, I was out of the country, I don't look at the Forum, my computer broke, I just forgot, I was waiting to see what the weather would be like). What is worse is when members complain about nothing, but won't lift a finger to help with the organisation.

However, moan over; ROs & RSs are all volunteers and we don't have to do this... But we do :)

As for next year.... I am putting together another mega 'Wings & Wheels'

This one will involved more formation flying for members (see recent report), lunch, a trip round an hanger to watch a vintage aeroplane being rebuilt and finally, very fast runs down a mile long runway in our own Porsches.

For this I will close the list at one month to go with no exceptions. I'll still get chaps ringing me the day before to get on the list [:D]

So watch this space & PP, then ring early.

I didn't see this either and like Rich I frequent the forum!!

Club will mailshot/e-mail members as required. That's what they are there for. Ask Jade.

Melv, this was only posted on the R31 section as it was a regional event. So unless you logged on just after I posted the item you would not see it. As for asking Club to mail shot every Club member re every regional event, I think I know what the outcome of that will be. Mind you, actually they do...it's call Porsche Post [:D]

The fact that R31 has over 250 members and we got absolutely zero response until after the closing date suggests that a couple of extra members would not have made it viable; we needed sufficient to fill a coach.

Of course PP carried the info over many months........

Derek - the apathy extends to some National organised events also, so you are not alone in your despondency. You appear to have done your best to promote the event, but as the saying goes - you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink.

Fact is there are so many events in the club now that members are overwhelmed with choice and they can work out quite expensive.
