Cannister Under Wheel Arch

New member
Have just finished cutting and welding new metal into the bottom of the front wheel arches. In doing so I have taken the arch liners off. Behind the passenger side is a canister with a rubber hose. The reson for the post is I suddenly rembered that I hadnt re-fixed the hose and then I thought what is that cannister for? I the hose important. Car seem to run fine.

Can someone tell me what it is please?

I think the canister is full of charcoal and is used to decontaminate the crank breather

correct, it has a vent pipe on the bottom that feeds the fumes and fuel vapours away
 
Ok, thanks for the reply's I had better put the hose back on.
