can't get into my car

Hi guys - sorry to post another "my name is Denys and I have a problem".. ..a couple of weeks ago I noticed that my 1998 996 C2 would unlock using the button on the key fob - but the driver's door handle didn't function. The passenger door was OK so I was able to climb into the car and push open the driver's door from the inside. Another job that I hoped to be sorted over Xmas..but then 4 inches of snow arrived.. To avoid problems with the alarm, a week or so ago I gained entry to the car as described above and started it. This morning I noticed that, once 'pinged', the passenger door wouldn't open. The light came on on both keys I used so I assume their batteries are OK. Remembering something in the handbook (which is, of course, inside the car!) I turned the key in the driver's door. I heard a click whichever way I turned it but, of course the door would not open..same with the passenger one. All I managed to do was set the alarm off - horrible sound which stopped after a little while and indicators which stopped some time later. The car seems secure so I thought I'd leave alone while I come up with a cunning plan. Have I been unlucky to encounter two problems at the same time? - that I cannot open the driver's door 'mechanically'..and that's what I need ti do to re-set the alarm?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Happy New Year (and decade) ;o)

I think you have one of two problems. Either the linkage between the handle and the door lock has broken/become disconnected (which isn't uncommon). Or perhaps the door lock mechanism has been changed and the lock blade hasn't been engaged in the door lock (also common). After 5 days your alarm system goes into energy saving mode, which disables the remote locking/unlocking. The only way in is to reset the alarm so that you can use the remote to unlock the doors. The way to do this is either switch on the ignition (impossible without opening the door) or to disconnect and reconnect the battery, which will wake up the system. To get to the battery you will need to open the front lid with the emergency release cable which will set off the alarm, by the way. Then disconnect and reconnect the negative terminal of the battery, unlock the door with the remote, and switch on the ignition to silence the alarm.

Email or PM me if you don't know where the emergency release cable is.
