can't get knees under steering wheel

I bought a 1998 Boxster 2.5 (986?) the other day.

I have an MX5 and love it but it is really a bit too small so I bought the Boxster off ebay as I assumed mistakenly as it turns out that as the car was built in Germany it must be suitiable for tall people and find to my utter annoyance (stupidity as I should have taken another one out for a test drive) that I cannot get my knees under the steering wheel!

Does anyone know how to solve this problem - I have looked at the possibility of fitting a dished sports steering wheel but can not find one I have also looked at adding an extender boss but none of them fit.

Can any one help me as otherwise I am going to have to sell the car immediately which is a real shame.

Thanks,

BigChris (6'4" 17 stone)

I do belive that some specialist offer an "offset boss" can't remeber who it was MAY have been Jasmine Porsche?

Hi there thanks for your rapid reply - gone to the Jasmine site but no apparent boss.

Any other ideas before I chuck this in and go and buy a dfferent mark - I just can't see how a company like Porsche would make such a fundamental error - my much slimmer 6'3 son can not get his knees in under the steering wheel either!

Sorry to hear about your problem Chris.

I'm not sure that it will help but have a look at this link:

I think that the problem was addressed in the later 987-series cars but hope you can sort something out with yours.

Hi Chris, daft as it may sound, have you tried altering the rake on the steering column and lowering the seat, I am 6 feet 6 ins and over 16 stones. Hope this is of some help, Regards Karl.

I have the same problem but strangely enough only with the right knee. Similar problem with my 964 as well.

Cheers,

Might this help?

I decided to go to my local Porsche dealer in Guildford and there I tried out 3 of their latest sports cars (boxster, 911 and a Carrera)- I could not fit comfortably in any of them! When I lifted my leg off the accelerator and transferred it to the brake I had to twist my knee AROUND THE EDGE OF THE STEERING WHEEL almost 45 degrees to hit the brake with the side of my foot!
Even though with the help of the salesman I had lowered the seat pushed it back as far as it can go and raised the steering wheel rake and pull it back as far as it would go.

In the end the salesman had to admit that there was not a car suitable for my build - where was that overweight tall Bavarian I imagined they had designed their cars around as I left their showroom feeling like Porsche had associated me with some kind of freak!
