Can't get my old 911 to start

I have a 1985 Porsche 911 3.2 Carerra with 42,000 genuine miles on the clock. I have owned the car for the last five years, bought it with 38,000 miles so haven't used it an awful lot. Last winter I garaged it and disconnected the battery. Five weeks ago I went to take it out and it wouldn't start. I have had the alarm system and immobiliser unit removed (fitted by Dick Lovell in London), there is fuel but I can't get a spark. I've had the electrics checked out ie crank sensor, crank position sensor, ecu, there is voltage coming into the coil and voltage coming out but not via the main coil lead to the distributor. Does anybody know what the problem could be?

Change the two crank sensors, they get crushed by the clamping bracket over time, and they give you a spark to the coil.
Quite a few times now the readings are ok but they don't work, don't jumble up the leads to the sensor plugs as they are both the same,

Have you tried replacing the DME under the passengers seat (think that the right relay), believe these are sometimes known to give up the ghost and can leave you stranded, I carry a spare with me, just in case.

Charles, fitted two new Porsche crank sensors today and she still won't fire.

Do you now have a spark at the plugs?? Did you give a 0.08 - 1 mm air gap to the sensor flywheel teeth,

Did you mark the sensor plugs in the engine bay and put them back in the right place, If wrong it wont start, Try swapping them over,
You can hot wire the DME relay under the pass seat. Join 30-87-87b 30 is power all the time 87b is the pump 87 is the ECU.

Report back. Or you can phone me.

Replaced DME relay, that was the first thing as well as disconnecting the alarm and immobilisers. Somebody had said the DME relay was prone for going. Charles has another suggestion I can try, any further help would be appreciated.

Charles, can you give me your contact telephone number please, hubby would like to speak to you about the 911 before we head off on holiday tomorrow.

Many thanks.

Charles, re your telephone conversation with Sam my worksop has done everything as advised and the car still won't start. Any other ideas?

Kind regards.

Not being patronising, but have you changed the coil and the main lead?

Mike, haven't changed the coil and main lead,.I understand the coil on these models rarely need replaced. Think I need to do it now. Will let you know how I get on. Thanks. Sheena Balmer .

I have now replaced the coil and main lead and still can't get a spark. The poor girl is in a hundred pieces and looking very sorry for herself, has anybody got any suggestions what I can try next?

Regards.

I have had the ECU tested and it's come back as faulty. A new one is in the region of £2,000, does anybody know where I can get a second hand one?

The numbers for the ECU are 911.618.111.09 and Bosch 0261200051.

Thanks.

Hi Sheena, try a wanted request on the Impact Bumpers forum, I'm sure someone will know of one.

Additionally they may know where you could get it repaired.

Hi
I got a replacement for my 994 Turbo from PH Sportcars in Shardlow, Derby for £150 a couple of years ago if they are still there may have one for a 911 or try Frazerpart & Douglas Valley Breakers.

Yup, I vouch for PH sportscars as well. Ask for Paul: i needed an ecu for my old 964 and it was very reasonable.

Best regards,

Bert
