Car not starting!

Hi All,

About three weeks ago I went to start my car and the ignition multi clicked at me and would not atrt the engine.

I bought a new battery, fitted it and thought that was that!

Just went to go out and the same thing happened agin!

I have it on charge not and looks like I need a new alternator.

Has anyone else had the same problem, can it be someting other than the alternator and how easy is it to fit?

Sounds like the alternator to me too. It is quite often the regulator pack which causes excessive drain. An exchange alternator from Porsche: £1000. From Euro car Parts: £300. Regulator pack: about £25.

Check the current on the battery, if it's good the alternator shouldn't factor into starting. Starter motors normally start to sound a little strange before they fail, kind of like a swooshing sound. I'm not familiar with the location of the starter on the 996 having never looked for it. If you can get to it, this may sound a bit silly, but you can knock the starter motor with a block of wood and a mallet to try and free it, it normally works but won't last.
