CAR RESPRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got a quote to have my S2 resprayed they want the car for 2 weeks and £2500 plus vat. Is this the going price or are they taking me for a ride!

That sounds a pretty reasonable quote to me, depending upon the quality of the job they're doing.
I've been quoted anything between £3 to 6k plus vat for a windows out respray (I'm in the NW Herts area, but its probably cheaper/dearer in other parts of the country). Its worth making sure the price includes new stone guards, rear sticker and so on (most places seem to forget that and it adds up pretty quickly) and IMO its vitally important to get to see as much of their work as possible, there are so many short cuts paint shops can make that a cheap job is rarely good job...
Also, if you've got any rust make sure thats taken into account as much as possible, you dont want to get hit with lots of unplanned extras once the works begun.
Best regards,
Peter.

I think a lot depends on where you go. I recently had my 964 done (see the thread at http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=173255) and I paid £2300 all in. Two weeks sounds very quick although it will depend on their work load and how much time they can spend on your car as opposed to the others they have in. Mine was in at TABS Enterprises in Woburn Sands for two and a half months - but there was a fair amount of small remedial work to be done here and there.

I was recommended to TABS via this forum (Thanks James aka Slider) and it was worth an initial visit to talk over what they would do before commiting to the work. I found that smaller outfits were more enthusiastic and more likely to do a good job because they wanted to rather the big outfits who just push the jobs through because the have to. I'm sure that doesn't apply to everybody but it emphasises the need to chat to them first.

Good luck with the respray - I'm sure you'll be pleased with it once you see the car in it's full glory!!!

Regards

Dave

A local guy in the region down here got a cab done at the bodyshop I use for £1,400. I haven't had a good look at it recently, but well over a year on it still looked superb, so it was a decent job. I was quoted £1,200 to make my coupe look mint; that's with no rust, but pretty much painting the whole car minus the roof above the gutter trims. I might get it done yet, but it's a lot to spend on a track slag for purely cosmetic benefit.

I think bodyshops more than anything you have to go on recommendation and price really seems to have little bearing on quality of work.

You could get it done at the APB (Approved Porsche Bodyshop apparently) for about £250 a panel - lifetime guarantee.

In the trade, you look at £50-£100 a panel for a good job depending on panel size (front wing = £50, bonnet £100 - including filling / prep etc.)

There's not alot of paint on a 944 - and not alot of trim to remove / mask etc really, so I recon a good job, all trim & glass removed (except the bonded windscreen on the T's - just remove the rubber surround) should easily cost less than £1500.

As a guide I recently got my wife's Focus painted - rear quarter panel (inc. removing dint), front bumper inc. removal , and rear bumper in situe. Job was a perfect metallic black match, no paint imperfections - £130 all in.

The thing is though it's never a simple case of just a respray. As soon as trim and glass starts being removed rust and other issues are discovered which really need to be sorted out at that point - it doesn't make sense to spend £1500 and just cover up any imperfections with new paint. I would be prepared to get the bottom of the wings repaired with replacement metal as no doubt all our cars are showing some signs of corrosion there and for a decent job you are looking at £300 a side, coupled with the notion that you might as well replace alot of those hard to replace seals around the car it starts to mount up very quickly.

My respray is creeping towards £1500 ... way up on the original price of £600 as I've had the sills new Turbo PU's etc etc (amongst many other items) added on to the wish list. Incidentally the 924 Turbo alloys are temporary (and soon for sale)!

Anybody know how to add multiple photos on a post?

I couldn't agree more.

The simple notion of a respray has meant, instead of a cosmetic touch-up, the purchase of:

Sills & quaters £188
Stoneguards £50
Wiper arms £40
Rear Porsche script £22
Handle/lock/mirror rubbers £30
Sunroof seal (both) OPC (OUCH) £114
Turbo PU's £370
Rear window seals £40
Tailgate seal £50
Chrome tailpipe £42
17" Cup 1's £300
17" Tyres £250

oh, and the respray at £1500 (inc. respray & lacquer of Cup's)

As they say, it'll be nice when it's finished

Now i think i will look around a bit more if its going to cost that much i will have to keep the car for another 4 years instead of 2 years!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone repaired and painted their 944 themselves??

The plan for later this year/ next year is to repair front wings myself, and re-spray all the stone chipped damaged front panels in 2-pack. (sprayed at college night course spray booth).

I'm also going to attend to the basic structure of my car (sills/ rear wheel arches etc) removing rust, re-applying the anti stone chip coating and priming and topcoating in cellulose (guards red) in my garage. Can't use 2-pack at home.

topcoating in cellulose (guards red) in my garage. Can't use 2-pack at home.

Hurry up and get the paint as cellulose is being withdrawn!

My paint supplier has informed me that....

All silvers have already stopped. Base colours will follow when a replacement as been developed!
