Car revs treatment.

I find this is a interesting question which has a different take on it depending on who you talk to (with some people avoiding the question by simply pointing out technicalities.

So this is my question? When do you guys start giving your car stick? Is it when temp gauge is warm, or when the oil pressure falls etc? I mean, I cannot imagine the trackdaying guys here let their car idle for 30-40 mins when their pressure drops to its lowest level (I.e around 3 bar) (I assume the oil is warm at this point).

Some people I spoke to think it doesn't matter when you give the car some beans.
 
I avoid driving them enthusiastically until the temperature gauge is up to the normal level, this only takes a few minutes with larger S2 block. I know the oil isn't up to full temperature at that point, but at least most of the metal parts will have expanded to their correct position.

On track if the oil pressure dropped below 3bar I would come in and let the car cool down for 30 minutes (which is the minimum time I'd rest between sessions anyway)
 
I agree with the Diver although can't speak of track experience. Always let the temp gauge get to normal level before giving it some beans. As he said everything fits better and should cause less wear and risk of damage. By that time everything should be adequately lubricated, bearing in mind this shouldn't take much more than 5 mins depending on the ambient temperature.
 
I have oil temp senders on my car, and it's interesting to see how long it takes the oil to reach even 70-80C - can be up to 10 miles. The oil temp barely register even when the colant is up to normal operating temp (first marker for my car)
 
Ed I'd be interested to find the details of that mate. Where from, how and how much etc. Might be interested in that myself. Not sure where I would fit it in though with the AFR and boost gauges already installed [:D]
 
I think I got mine from ETB instruments - all VDO gauges to match the factory ones, fitted with a Lindsey gauge panel.

I have 2 temp senders, one in the sump plug, one in a sandwich plate under the filter

My garage wired the 2 oil senders to a single gauge, I can switch between the 2 inputs.

I avoid revving it above 3k until the oil pressure reaches its minimal level at tickover (about 3 bar). In the current weather it usually takes about 15 miles.
 
I'm with Thom, i always used to wait for the oil pressure to drop to its normal hot level before giving it the beans.

Much easier with the 'Beetle' thanks to the prominent oil temp gauge - interestingly (or not!) the oil temp rises much more quickly from cold that in the 944, primarily due to the engine being air/oil cooled.
