Car shudders every so often

Hi all

My 99 2.5 occassionally shudders when I accelerate. It usually happens when I've been going slowly for a while and try to accelerate. It does not happen at low revs, but more in the mid range, and if I stand on the loud pedal, the problem usually goes away. I would like to know why it happens though, any suggestions? It's not dirty petrol as I've filled from different garages to eliminate that issue. It's not a consistent problem either.

TIA,
P

It might be the first failing of a MAF sensor, but it could be one of the spark plug coil packs breaking down under load. Does it happen more in damp weather / wet roads ??

Could be something as simple as a spark plug too.

Suggest you find a local independent to have an initial look.

Depends what you mean by 'shudder' - Worst case scenario is it might be the start of a clutch slipping. Sounds like you are suffering the problem when the engine is able to put most load on on the clutch. However, as it is not evident when you 'stamp on the loud pedal' I would expect that either it isnt the clutch or the clutch is fully slipping under these conditions thus avoiding the judder effect - can you hear the engine revs being proportionately higher than the road speed when you do accelerate really hard?

No change in engine noise at all lately, sounds like it always did when I hammer it (and when I don't, which happens more often unfortunately).

I have an independent specialist close by, and I'll get him to have a sconce.
