Car sounds like a tractor - No boost?

Hi guys,
Need some advice on what to do. I was driving home and heard a "pop" sound coming from under the hood, the car seemed to run fine but would only rev to 3500 revs or so. Pulled over but couldnt see anything out of the ordinary and it being late at night on a dim country road didnt help matters either. Drove off again and the car started to develop what can only be described as a tractor sound coming from under the hood, I had no power to speak of so I was glad being only minutes from home.

It turns out the crossover pipe thats mounts on the turbo has broke all the way round the mounting flange? I could get a large screwdriver in there with ease and seen it was broke off all the way round? Never heard of this happen before, any suggestions on to why it happened and should I weld it back together or replace?

TIA

The additional strain of encouraging the pipe into position to accommodate a non standard Turbo, and subsequently heating and allowing to cool, I shouldn't wonder.

As I recall Jon and Simon spent considerable time in getting an exact mounting for Paul's turbo to avoid such problems.

I have every confidence that those of us who have "encouraged" our non standard turbos to fit will be noting similar problems in the future.

Andrew fitted that turbo in nov 03 with a little over 10k miles on it since fitted. I would hate to be replacing the crossover pipe every 10k

Yikes, nasty one John [&o]

I know mine needed a fair bit of work to make it fit properly, I'll let you know if it gets to the 10k miles mark.

Only 10k miles since Nov 03 - shame on you [;)]

. To be fair, I've been living between Ireland and the USA since feb 05 so that explains in low usage - I wish it were different Paul

. Oh, best of luck with LIL in her re-launch!

John,
Sorry to see that, it will be tricky to repair, you need someone good to tack it in about 3 places with a Mig (if it can be accessed), and then gently remove the C/O pipe and put a proper weld around it.
I don't know, but I would not expect it to fracture there. Perhaps as suggested the non-std Turbo is the cause.

I had a Scirocco Storm with a Turbo Technics 170 kit in 1989, (when the roof over my head prevented a 944T[8|]) but it was a glutton for this sort of thing. I think it goes with modified Cars.

George - I'm just going to replace it. I dont want to mess with welding, knowing my luck it would just break again as soon as its put back on. A rennlister in holland has kindly offered a free pipe, I just have to pay shipping, its great that theres helpful porsche guys like that out there I must say...

John.

John,
I'd be interested to see how it lines up, - suggest you go and take a look.

If the Turbo has a mating face which is out of alignment then your in for more of the same. Perhaps there is some float in the Turbo Mounting which will give you correct alignment? A good spanner man will know the sequence for torquing up to avoid stresses.

I like the Dutch, - now lets see, I could use a set of PCCB disc's for my 944T..............

Good Luck[:D]
