Car switching off when warm?

Bit of an odd one this, and sad to report that my 996 has a running issue at the moment.

Took the car out at the weekend, someone pulled out of a space in a carpark without looking so I did an emergency stop but also ended up stalling the car (was on a ramp leading up). Car wouldn't start back up, I thought perhaps the steep incline starved the car of fuel somehow, but after rolling backwards and into a space on level ground it still wouldn't start.

To cut a long story short, since this time the car starts and runs fine from cold, but when it gets up to running temp and I shut it off it won't start back up until the engine is cold again. Today I ran the car upto running temp, and it switched off about 5 minutes after sitting at running temp and would't come back on until the car had cooled down.

Here are the things I have tried:

- Undone blacking plug on fuel line near injector rail - it would seem there is fuel there and plenty of pressure
- Checked fuel relay, bridged pins and actuated fuel pump but still no difference
- disconnected various sensors and reconnected, engine temp sensor, tps, MAF to name a few
- disconnected tank vent pipe and removed filler to check for vapour lock
- checked fuel pump is pumping (can hear it in the front of the car turning round)
- pulled a coil and plug and bridged to serperate ground - no spark
- read ECU fault codes - Zero present
- car turns off when at running temp (80ish deg)
- car starts when cold (<40 deg)

Have checked actual data on TPS, that's working, MAF sits at 100kg/h before any flow, not sure if that is correct but that was replaced only a few months back and should the motor should still run anyway. Engine compartment sensor reads aprox 70degrees when the car shuts off (like someone has turned the ignition off) and oil temp is a little over 80.

Not sure what else to look at really, it's bloody annoying though, as the car starts and runs fine, but keeps switching off when warm!

Is there some safety cut off or something to do with temperature? Perhaps there is no fault code as the the ECU thinks everything is doing what it should?

My initial thought was fueling related, but given the fact there is no spark something must be either telling the car not to fire, or something if faulty which isn't reported by the ECU.

I also had a lot of sensors disconnected when checking the TB and various other bits the other week (and when replacing some parts) so not sure if I disturbed something, however, as I mentioned all sensors report back ok - no fault codes, I'm pulling my hair out here....

Cheers,

Steve

Oh yes, my other thought was the CPS, but wouldn't that report a malfunction if it went bad when it gets hot?

Years ago my MY2000 C4 tip had a spell of not restarting when warm, e.g. after a fuel stop and would take around an hour or more before restarting. It was an immobiliser fault which took over 4 weeks to diagnose and fix properly and as it happened just outside of warranty it cost me £1,200 (2002 prices) at an OPC to remedy. I hope it's not the same for you!

That's a bit of a pain indeed.

Interesting you mention though, as the only fault codes I found were on the alarm system:

DME 5.2 Selected
About to get fault codes
moduleType = MotronicDME522
9X6 Alarm Selected
About to get fault codes
moduleType = AlarmI32
dtcCount = 2
Fault Number: 14
Description: Right door secured but not locked
Repair Infomation: Test point 14
Repair Infomation: Status: Not present
Repair Infomation: Number of times DTC present: 1
dtcCount = 2
Fault Number: 42
Description: No engine start possible
Repair Infomation: Wrong key or wrong transponder pill
Repair Infomation: Status: Not present
Repair Infomation: Number of times DTC present: 1

But with a count of only two on each, and many instances of trying to restart when the fault occurs I would have hoped it wouldn't be that.

I have tried different keys and no joy, also I can't seem to clear the alarm codes so they could well be quite old.

I'm still placing my money on the cps at the moment, but who knows.

Cheers,
