Car Tax Differences

Does anyone know why the road tax on my 1998 996 3.4 is £118 for 6 months while my wife's 2003 986 Boxster 2.7 is £143 for 6 months. I would have thought hers would be cheaper than mine not the other way round?? Surely my emissions must be more than hers. Thanks John

They are. The cut off is March 2001 for emissions based tax. If your car is earlier than this (yours is obviously), road tax is based upon engine capacity. After this date, it is emissions based.

PS: There is another cutoff for cars pre-2006. Both my cars (Turbo and V8 Range Rover) are pre-2006 so the road tax is capped at group J (£245 per annum), despite effectively being in higher groups.

Which is why my 996 turbo is cheaper to tax than my Golf gti! Not that I'm complaining because if they change it you know it's only going one way!!

Thanks for that John. Bet not many people are aware of that. Think I'd better stick to older Porsches then!! John

... and the other important date (for 997, rather than 996 owners) is 23 march 2006. Before that date of registration it's 260 per year, afterwards it's 460!

Should I keep quiet about my 2008 US import ? ...... 12 months road tax = 215 pounds [:)]
