Car Warranty - Auto Protect Administration - Any Good?

Hi,
I am about to take possession of a 993 911 C2S from a long standing garage in London (has race heritage etc). I have been asked if I would like to take up the offer of an Auto Protect Administration (APA) mechanical and electrical Warranty policy. Apparently they are unique in that they have no claim limits and cover all mechanical and electrical items. I have been told that if I purchase the warranty this year when I purchase the car, it will cost £990 per anum, however from next year onwards it rises quite a bit (cannot remember by how much but up to around £1300 seems familiar).

I guess the usefulness of these types of warranties all depend on whether or not you actually need to use them for a substantial breakdown and whether or not the company actually pays out! Having said this I have recently read that these type of insurance schemes are now FSA regulated. I have been assured that APA do pay out, but the assurance came from the garage.

I am of course sceptical about taking out this warranty as I realise how much profit insurance companies make each year and the bottom line is they only make that profit by taking in substantially more than they pay out!

Does anybody have any experience with APA please, either positive or negative?

Thanks.

Have realised that I most probably should have posted this in the 'General Porsche Discussion Area'. Can an Admin or Moderator move this Post to that section for me please.

All used cars come with an implied 6 month warranty thanks to the sales of goods act. It's worth reading up on that before parting with any cash.

Personally, I find that manufacturer's warranties are the only ones worth getting.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
The garage has detailed that they will provide a 12 months engine and gearbox warranty, however they really seem to believe in this warranty so I was wondering if it was any good. The key selling points would seem to be that it is unlimited on mileage, should support most/all claims and is about to increase in cost if subscribed to at a later date. I realise all this could be Hot Air, hence the post.

Check the claim limits, exclusions & small print

I had one which covered electrical items (or so I thought) Alternator failed BUT you had to get it checked by an independant person at your cost before they paid out mean time car was immobile awaiting decision, ABS ecu went so thought no problem replace, not quite, they tried to source one from Europe cheaper than OPC (in stock)one which took over a week to appear again car off road 3 days before holiday no hire car nothing

Would not touch with bargepole

Would an OPC extended warranty cover 993 after inspection or is that just too old a car?

Warranty companies have to make money - you have to ask yourself, what is the worse thing that can happen (engine blows up) - what will it cost you - 4 or 5 years warranty payments - but is it likely? Does it happen to 1 in 5 of us each year? no.... therefore.... (he saids touching wood!)

I bought from the same London dealer as you, I expect, and was given a "free" 6 month APA warranty. I claimed for a replacement central locking motor one week before it ran out. To my great surprise APA were very efficient and helpful, and the claim was covered nearly in full (they didn't quite stretch to the full hourly rate of the repairer). The repair garage were sceptical, so I paid them directly and claimed back from APA - a cheque arrived within days. OK, it was only a smallish claim, but I was happy.

Having said that, I wouldn't shell out nearly £1K/year for a warranty. Put it in a deposit account instead and use that to pay any repair bills !
