Hi John,

I don’t know where you obtained the figures but I would be very surprised if there was much difference between 987 and 997 weights given the commonality of parts, although the PDK transmission is maybe 20kg heavier than the manual. You need to be comparing the same weight … DIN, etc.

Aluminium body construction was only introduced on the 981 and 991-series cars and I don’t think that the weight saving was huge.

I think your figures are incorrect. One usually reliable source has

Cayman 987 1350kg

Carrera S 997.2 1425kg

Carrera S 997.1 1420kg

I don't think your Cayman is 200kg heavier (unless of course you weigh 270kg more than your friend!)

 
i got the figures from my friend, i think he's probably jealous of my cayman.

he's going to be really annoyed now. many thanks.

 
my first post on here. i have a 2010 987 cayman s pdk and a friend of mini has a 2008 997 carrera s. can anyone explain why my cayman is 200kg heavier than his. he says his 911 uses a lot of aluminium panels but i agree.
we're just curious.

Just to add that I think Graham’s figures are nearer the mark.

The most reliable weight specs are DIN and EU kerb weights:

DIN - Weight of the car with all fluids necessary for operation, including a 90% full fuel tank.

EU - The EU kerb weight adds a further 75kg to the DIN weight to imitate a driver and luggage.

FYI: You may not be aware but the 987 and 997 share the same structure forward of the A-pillar, including the front suspension, steering and fuel tank, and also they use the same doors (and maybe bonnets?). They have the same basic engine, although the intake and exhaust systems are different, and there are significant differences between the Gen1 and Gen2 engines, and the manual transmissions are different. Other items like seats, steering wheel, electrical and electronic components and systems are common as are the wheels, although the offsets are unique to the individual cars. The unibodies and lights, etc. are different, and it makes you appreciate that 987 Caymans were a comparative bargain price and performance-wise compared with the 997 911.

David, your 987 Spyder weighs 1275kg according to the source I used. Of course I don't if you've lightened it further?

However it still has a power to weight ratio of 252bhp/ton which is rather better than the Cayman S at 237 bhp/ton, and better than the 991.1 at 246 bhp/ton.

But if the OP's Carrera owing friend has a gen2 then it trumps David's Spyder with 271 bhp/ton. ( I'd still take the Spyder any day though)

Yup, but it’s a 987 Spyder and not a Cayman, and without a Boxster’s weighty hood and electric mechanism, and deleting the radio and the a/c in particular will have shed a fair amount of weight.
