Car won`t start now !!!!!

Any ideas at all ??

Drove it to work today so I could get the garage to look at it for fitting new suspension.

Has been running perfectly, took it for a clean on the way home, but after I took some photo`s today to upload on here, I left the car stood outside for an hour or so. Came to start it later and . . .nothing!!

I fitted a new battery a month ago after this happened before and it was fine. I`m thinking the cars been running on the power in the battery in the few times i`ve driven it over the past month and has not been re-charging.

After half an hour or so, it just about started but was very weak and if left running almost came to a halt if the revs are not kept up.

As a non-mechanical bloke, I think the car is not re-charging the battery, is there something I can check ??

cheers

Tony

Tony,

A check on the battery voltage has got to be a good start. Your local Halfords (or similar) should be able to performa a battery test and check the voltage. Without the engine running I would want to see something around the 12 volts but with the engine running you should see something in excess of 14 volts. If this is not the case then I would suspect you have an alternator problem.

Does your "Charge" light go out in the clock?? Does it stay on for a while and go out when you rev the engine?? Is there a bulb in it??? Answers to these and many more questions may help to identify the problem.

Regards

Dave

When you say it won't start do you mean it seems dead (low battery) or turns over but won't fire easily? Apart from a dead battery the first symptom could be a bad earth strap to the battery (undo it from the body and clean it up) or a bad connection to the starter motor (again undo connections at the starter motor, clean up and tighthen). The second symptom could be from a dodgy DME relay in the fuse box.

cheers guys, will check how it is tomorrow aft, at the moment when I put the key in the ignition and turn it, it`s just dead [:(]

On a more positive note, I spoke to Stewart at K300 today Steve. He`s going to sort the PP`s and a set of KW variant 3 for me, just my luck he says Recaro have put all prices up by £50-£100 PER SEAT!!!!!!! since you bought yours.

Here's an example of why I think it could be starter motor related:

My theory on batteries is that even with a perfectly working charging system the car needs to run very regularly for it to put back what is being taken out. My battery has a nice little charge indicator window. As the car is only used once a week the indicator soon shows it is losing charge. With the recent icy weather I've used the car even less and can feel that the battery is getting to the point where it will need to be taken off and recharged (it too is close to not having enough to start the car). Yet I know my charging system is working well because after a track day the battery indicator will show that it has been fully recharged.

So I guess the best solutions to maintain battery power are to either use the car very regularly or have it on a conditioner when not in use (not an easy option in my own case).
