Carbon Bonnets

I've just heard that the guys at RPM Technic are getting an order together to have some very high quality carbon fibre bonnets made for the 944 and thought I'd post here in case anyone else was tempted. Price is anticipated to be under £800 and they are being made by a highly reputable UK manufacturer. The finish will be so good they can be left unpainted and will be road spec so have hinges/latches meaning they can be used like the original (although probably with a bonnet prop instead of the gas supports). If the quality is as good as I'm led to believe (and having seen their other work I can well believe it) then the price seems quite reasonable to me for such a light panel.

About twelve kilogrammes, Id guess; perhaps a shade more. It depends what its made of, of course - most 'carbon fibre' bonnets are really wet laid CF over a GRP core. Ive seen a good number of CF bonnets for Imprezas that weigh more than a standard alloy bonnet...

As far as I'm aware this will be a carbon only product so will be about as light as possible. I believe it should be about 1/3rd the weight of the original part.

Well the original part is a good seventeen kilos Pete, so Id expect that a light bonnet could be under one quarter of the weight, at 4 kilos.

Mine was much heavier than 17kg (without underbonnet foam), it was a way over 20kg on my scales. I really don't think 4kg is possible with a road spec bonnet (i.e. with bracing, hinges, latch mounts), mine is very light (much lighter than FG ones) but it isn't that light.

[edited to add, I've just checked and they do a road spec 968 one and that is 5kg, given that the 968 bonnet is smaller I'd suggest 6kg ish is probably about right]

If anyone's interested I'd recommend dropping Ollie an email, he can give you all the details, his email is workshop@rpmtechnik.co.uk

I took the 17kilos weight off Neil's thread: I havent weighed one myself. The 4.x kilogrammes estimate was based around Teilecar's carbon part, which, from the pictures, appears to have all reguired fittings. They also offer a 5.x kg GRP part; according to their site. Im getting my 937 rear wings from Marek, but I think that I will be going for a cheapo Pro9 bonnet...

The Brummie bonnet is a decent quality part, well certainly the best made out of the GF parts fitted to my race car. ISTR it weighs something like 9 or 10 Kg, and ISTR Simon you are right that my S2 bonnet weighed 17 Kg.

I would guesstimate well under half the weight of the stock hood. The stock hood is quite hard to lift in a perpendicular fashion. The Van Zweden c/f one I have 'feels' about 1/3rd of the stock one and is much lighter to lift by hand. At 800gbp I would grab one if the fit and finish is how Peter describes. Peter, would they do any venting if requested? I can testify to seeing a lot of heat leaving through my vents and my temps on the track seem to have dropped overall which I contribute partially to the vents and also to the 993 oil cooler. I barely get over the first mark on the stock temp gauge and oil temp was 114c on track. This is a bit OT but I feel the vents are a very good option in view of getting some hoods made up.
