Careful with those rip off tyre merchants

All,

Not a really interesting post but i just wanted to let all you other Porsche (996) owners know what happened to me last week.
I got a slow puncture (nail right in the middle of the tread) and had to got to the local tyre dealers (the one whose moto is "you cant get better than a...." & used to have mechanics on the adverts jumping round!). The reason, before you ask, why i went to them is that they did me a real good deal on 4 tyres last year & they are close.

Anyway they informed me this time that they couldn't simply just plug the tyre, as the back tyres were illegal on the inside due to the amount of wear. Now the only time i know when a tyre is illegal is when the centre is worn [8|]- but i took his word for it anyway. I was desperate to get my hands on 2 new conti's (as i was going away), which they could not get hold of for 2 days at a cost of £470. On the off chance i called my porsche independent who luckily had 2 tyres left and reserved them for me (£439). I crept up to the independent who actually took one look at the tyres and told me there is hardly any wear on the inside of them and plugged the tyre for £18. Major saving of £400+

So moral to this story is dont trust those tyre dealers as they are there to rip off anyone they can...who has a nice car. Maybe it was mostly my own fault but hey we live and learn! I have consequently put a compliant in and am expecting a call from their area manager, hopefully with an offer of 4 new tyres (not that their needed)! [;)] If they do offer me them i will sell them onto you guys at a discounted rate.......any particular brand anyone wants!!

cheers

£470 for 2 Conti's? I pay less than that for all four!

erm, glad to hear the story has a happy ending, but you really should know better than to visit such an outlet in the first place.

If you value your car, and your rims, you need to entrust your car and all service related matters to someone you can trust, such as a recommended indi, or an OPC...(generally speaking...)

I have never known Kwik Fit to be cheap and have suffered rim damage in the past (on company cars that I have driven).

I hope you have kept your old rear tyres as evidence...in any case, I think the best you can expect is a letter of apology...don't think you'll be getting any free rubber...but I doubt you'll even get an apology. They'll probably base a response on the subjectiveness of assessing tyre wear...and having Customer safety in mind.

to be honest initially i didnt have too much choice of the tyre place to go to as i didnt know how bad the puncture was.... i valued the car enuff to get to the closest place!! plus anyone who takes the wheels/tyres off i always make them check for the scuffs (if any) are on there (anal i know , but hey![8|] )

Good result in the end - a lesson learned hopefully - bet you check your tyres more thoroughly in the future [;)]

I've used Bracknell Tyre & Battery too. Very cheap (£526 for a full set of 18" P-Zero Rossos - last year) but they get soooo busy you have to be prepared to wait. I found a local mobile chap recently who came and replaced the rears a couple of weeks ago - £330 all in.

The first time I had a puncture I went to Kwik Fit in Gloucester, I didn't know any better. They let me hover as the tyre was removed, checked, plugged and replaced. They double checked the torque setting on the nuts - two different fitters and not a mark on the wheels. The only thing they didn't do was to trim the plug which caused much angst later due to the noise it made in cool air! The manager refused to take any money but I stuck a tenner in the tea boat.

This was back in 2000 when the Boxster was rather less in evidence.

Ditto on the Bracknell tyres tip - used them for years and superb.

Two new Conti Sports on the rear were about £350 recently and ZERO wait time (around 11.00am midweek)

That sounds cheap, were they N4 type 225/40 & 285/30 x 18 ???

Good result, maybe. But I think I would have decided to replace the tyre on a Porsche, rather than have it repaired.
