Carerra Cab to a Boxter S ..... Opinion please

Image

New member
I have just been lent a Cayman S for a couple of days whilst my 996 Carerra Cabriolet in for Service & Brakes ( First set since new in 2002 after 41K miles ) ..... I was absolutely blown away by the all round ability of the Cayman to the point of possibly considering changing to one. However, I like to drive with the roof down and as Cayman is not available as a Targa type top a Boxter S would seem to fit the bill. Would I be happy changing to it is the question I have, and would I regret not staying with the Carerra. ...... If others have made this move I would be pleased to receive comment.

I have had both and the Boxster will not disappoint ....so long as you do not think some will say nice but its not a 911 Mine was a 996 Cab and to be honest the 987 Boxster is a better drive .The new 981 is in a different league again ,go test drive one .If you want the ultimate go buy a Spyder nothing compares to this.

I have a 997s Cab and before this I had a Cayman S. I must admit that the ride in the Cayman was better but the noise level was quite high. I also like to drive with the roof down and I find that even then it is quiter than the Cayman. A difficult choice. I like them both, but the 997 wins.

Thanks for your early replies and experiences ...... Just collected my 996 Cab from Service etc, wallet lighter. ....... My Cab did not feel as sharp as the 981 Cayman, and the Porsche Centre had a High Spec White Boxter S in the showroom .............. nearly seduced, but ..... and there always seems to be a but ................... just not sure, A new car for 1/2 the price of a 991 C2S and only a very small difference in performance. MMMMMMMMMMMm ...... Maybe buy the Cayman S and keep the Carerra Cab ........ !!! I will think further

If you dont need the back seats for what there worth and like top down driving there is no finer or practical Porsche. The Boxster has plenty of boot space and all round performance no brainer[;)]
As already said the 981 takes the Boxster to another level.

Recently driven the new Cayman 981 and what a car awsome would leave my GT3 in the weeds on country twisty roads.

Would dearly love the new Cayman over my GT3 but just buying a reg one would not be for me. On the other hand bring out a 981 R in decent colours and spec like my old Cayman S Ltd edition and oh yes thats the car for me.
Praying and hoping Porsche do it and be brave and lets have some decent colours.

As the Guys are saying above the 981 Boxster is an Awsome car very hard to beat, and looks mega value for money againts the 991. Ive had 964 cab 986s and now 987s i think the Boxster is unbeatable if you want open top fun you can't go wrong, I myself like open top fun but with just having a little one recently the Boxster is getting no use -No Back Seats[:(], I'm looking at 997gen2 models but i think the 911 was made to be a coupe so my verdict would be open top Boxster everytime, If it's Coupe Cayman or 911

ive had the 996 and even the 987 boxster was an improvement in my opinion.the 981 is even better so i wouldnt worry avbout changing for a 981-it will feel every bit as quick as a 996 and much more up to date tech and quality wise.as an open top the boxster s is hard to beat-but next spring i am going back 911 route as we need to fit the doggies in and lindas fed up with them on her lap/footwell .but it prob wont be a cab because as others have said i prefer my 911 to be coupe[;)]

Off today to test a Boxster S, I will then have a direct comparison with my cherished 996 Cabriolet. I notice that the Boxster has less BHP than the Cayman S I drove recently, hope that is not apparent in the drive. Car I'm looking at seems to have had the options book thrown at it, so I'm prepared to be amazed.

OPC was very friendly, and the car I went to look at was superbly fitted and equipped. We spent about an hour with the showroom car and found an issue I had not expected.

I found that the 14 way fully electric seating and steering column adjustments meant that my 6'2" frame did not give me a comfortable or acceptable seating position. The Cayman I had previously on loan was comfortable ...... so why the difference. ....... The difference was that the Cayman had only the 2 way electric adjustments, and the provision of the extra bolsters especially the ones that are supposed to support the back just swell the seat to the point that I just didn't fit!

The sales staff, insisted that I would not be comfortable and that as they only had Boxster S demonstrator with 14 way seating adjustment I should wait until they had a demo with the "cheaper" seat set up. ...... therefore still waiting.

They did have a couple of interesting cars there though ..... An Agate Grey 991 Turbo S Coupe ...... and a ready for collection new Boxster S in a Royal Blue colour with Full RED leather interior and Yellow Ceramic Brakes ....... I'm sure the owner will be very happy, but would not suit me.

I've found this. I'm 6'3" and I just don't fit in the full electric seats.

The carbon buckets in my Spyder fit like a glove though! You'd best go for a Spyder instead......
