I recently had one of the tailpipes fall off my silencer "" not a problem I'd wish on anybody!
I'd planned at some point to fit a set of Carnewal RSR silencers so here was a great excuse. Because my silencers were damaged I would have had to return the units to Carnewal for modification rather that get exchange units (they reasonably expect the return units to be in a reusable condition). So it was going to have to be a trip to my local indy to have the units removed, then ship them to Belgium, then wait for them to come back and then finally have them re-fitted. Car (my daily drive) off the road for probably about 4 days so it was all getting a bit out of hand. (My indy didn't have any spare silencers that I could have used).
Gert Carnewal suggested I came over and he'd do the work while I waited. I looked at the costs and in fact, with a cheap Chunnel ticket (£51.00) and cheap hotel in Calais (£49.00) it was going to cost less than getting it done here in the UK.
So off to Calais on Thursday night (after a business meeting in London) and then I drove to Carnewal in Belgium on Friday morning. I arrived late morning and Gert did the work in about 2 hours and I was back home in Reading around 7:30pm! This involved rebuilding my silencers almost completely having various other items like broken straps and clamps replaced. His attention to detail is impressive "" he even sand blasted all the crap of my exhaust tips. The setup he has there is really quite large and would put many indies to shame. He and his wife are also really hospitable so the wait in their "˜guest house' was equally enjoyable. At the end of the day the costs were very reasonable and certainly cheaper than getting it done here.
So to the RSR's "" an absolutely glorious sound without any of the "˜booming' whilst motorway cruising that you hear other makes suffer from. My drive back to Calais was a pleasure!
So in conclusion : RSR's great, Carnewal great! I would certainly recommend Gert as a source of many Porsche upgrades but also suggest you let him fit them "" you'll enjoy the experience!
