Carnewal Belgium

I recently had one of the tailpipes fall off my silencer "" not a problem I'd wish on anybody!

I'd planned at some point to fit a set of Carnewal RSR silencers so here was a great excuse. Because my silencers were damaged I would have had to return the units to Carnewal for modification rather that get exchange units (they reasonably expect the return units to be in a reusable condition). So it was going to have to be a trip to my local indy to have the units removed, then ship them to Belgium, then wait for them to come back and then finally have them re-fitted. Car (my daily drive) off the road for probably about 4 days so it was all getting a bit out of hand. (My indy didn't have any spare silencers that I could have used).

Gert Carnewal suggested I came over and he'd do the work while I waited. I looked at the costs and in fact, with a cheap Chunnel ticket (£51.00) and cheap hotel in Calais (£49.00) it was going to cost less than getting it done here in the UK.

So off to Calais on Thursday night (after a business meeting in London) and then I drove to Carnewal in Belgium on Friday morning. I arrived late morning and Gert did the work in about 2 hours and I was back home in Reading around 7:30pm! This involved rebuilding my silencers almost completely having various other items like broken straps and clamps replaced. His attention to detail is impressive "" he even sand blasted all the crap of my exhaust tips. The setup he has there is really quite large and would put many indies to shame. He and his wife are also really hospitable so the wait in their "˜guest house' was equally enjoyable. At the end of the day the costs were very reasonable and certainly cheaper than getting it done here.

So to the RSR's "" an absolutely glorious sound without any of the "˜booming' whilst motorway cruising that you hear other makes suffer from. My drive back to Calais was a pleasure!

So in conclusion : RSR's great, Carnewal great! I would certainly recommend Gert as a source of many Porsche upgrades but also suggest you let him fit them "" you'll enjoy the experience!

I agree. Gert has a great setup over there and is very friendly & helpful. He fitted RSRs and new shocks for me last year. We made it into a weekend break, visiting Brugges and Ghent. Highly recommended.

I am planning to do the exact same !!!!! ---

If you dont mind me asking ???

How much was it all in? + the Tax !!!

What condition where you "trade in" ones !!!!! ??

The exhaust job was 626.24 euros including tax (21%) and this included the silencers (repaired) - (400 euros as per his website), 2 clamps (split), heatshields (shot) and a strap (which was broken). I also bought a motosound airbox cover (extra 100 euros incl tax). So total bill 726.24 euros.

It's about 100/120 miles from the tunnel to Carenwal's.

My silencers, which were repaired by Gert were not in a good condition!

Give him a call or email him and explain what condition yours are in and I'm sure he'll be able to give you a cost. The figures he quoted me were spot on and he was quite open about any possible add on costs - clamps, heatshields, straps etc. This guy is very helplful and easy to do business with.

If you do drive over there watch out for the road (N60) through Ronse - the N60 disappears in the middle of the town and I guess I lost about 20mins there! Plus when looking for signs for Ronse it changes it's name to/from Renaix - the joys of driving in Belgium! (I wish I'd got the European maps for my satnav as my good old map reading skills were a bit rusty!) Still it was still a great trip!

Gert is a top bloke - very helpful and knows his 993s!

Glad you like your RSRs. I've had them on both my 2s and current 4s. Highly recommended.

Another vote for Gert from me - good person to deal with.

+1

Seems a well worn route between Reading and Gert's place. I had the RSR job done on my 993 (how I miss her... [:(]) and the service was excellent. A good day out too

Hmmmm this all sounds extremely tempting - but I wonder sometimes about resale values and general lairyness of sports exhausts
Is there a website where you can hear the difference between stock and RSRs do you know?
Chris

Hi Chris

I wouldn't have thought the fitting of sports exhausts would adversely affect resale values as they are so easy (and relatively cheap) to change if someone is unhappy about them.

I chose the RSR's from Carnewal because they use the standard boxes and modify those. Also they are 'sportier' sounding but not too noisy and certainly no booming at cruising speeds. They seemed to me to be the best 'compromise' and I'm certainly pleased with them.

I think there are various videos on YouTube which aim to give you an indication of noise but I didn't think they were really very useful plus they tend to show the sound outside not inside. Perhaps find someone locally with sports boxes or go to a track day where they're might be some cars with sports boxes.
