Carnewal exhaust and track days

My 981 S is equipped with a Carnewal exhaust, I've no idea what the decibel rating is, but it sounds pretty loud to my ears!

Am I likely to run into issues if I want to try a couple of track days? I'd be interested in hearing people's experiences.

It completely depends on the track you're choosing and their noise limits on the day - are they testing static or drive by?

Aim for noisy/unlimited days to be safe.

Forgive me if I sound naive, but what's classed as a noisy day and what's the significance between the static test and the drive-by?

Trackdays.co.uk is useful for showing the sound restrictions of each track day, but without any context or baseline, it's difficult to know where my car would fit in.

Perhaps a track like Goodwood would be a good starting point, as it's a high static and a high drive-by.

You don't say where you are but if you live near Goodwood, call them and have your car tested. They will do static tests on non-private track days, normally 07:45 thru 08:30.

The other southern tracks that will also test visitors are Castle Combe and Thruxton, best to call in advance to ensure the noise tester will be there.

Gary,

Stating the obvious but I think the only way to find out for certain is either to measure the static level yourself or tag along to a local track day and ask the officials to measure it for you. I’m sure that if you enquired beforehand they would be able to accommodate you. Better that than turning up on the day having paid to attend and finding that your car’s ineligible! 😲

Edit: Simultaneous post with Ralph!

For reference, my 718 GT4 registers as 90/91 dB on a static test at 4k revs. Drive by could be at 8k revs and therefore much noisier but as it's further away from the mic and only in passing by briefly it will register a different level.

Thanks for the comments.

I think you are right, it's probably best to get the car tested at the track in question. I think some of my confusion comes from the inconsistent experiences some people have shared online.

You may pass the static test but fail the drive-by. Or you may be ok with Oulton's drive-by at 92Db, but then not Donnington which has a 98Db limit.

A bit of a pain, but that's the price for having a car with a fruity exhaust.

Different testers, different days, different methods, different equipment - there really are a lot of variables which contribute to the different experiences. I think you just need to use common sense when booking a day e.g. if you know you have a loud car then a heavily noise resticted day at Brands Hatch (for example) is likely to end in disappointment.

Best of luck sorting something out!

Trust me if your car is stock and the only thing you've added is a Carnewal cat-back then you will have zero issues at any UK track day.

That's reassuring to hear.

In any case, I did compare my car's Db rating vs. a friend's standard Cayman. It's not scientific, as I just used an iPhone, but at 5000rpm his was 100.8DB and mine was 101.7DB.

I'll still get it sound checked properly but I thought it was an interesting comparison.
