Just happened to be browsing the Carnewal site (as you do...) and noticed Gert is selling Xenon upgrade kits for 993's.

http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p061.htm

Been thinking about getting this done for a while and know Gert normally sells good stuff - anyone have experience with this specific upgrade kit?

Cheers

Pete

No experience but been over there for a couple of bits on mine and he is a great bloke. Seems amazingly cheap compared to some other kits I have seen around - very tempted at that price! If anyone has fitted would be good to know if results are good!

These HID kits look similar to a set that I bought from AceParts. Alan at Ace-Parts has a 993, give him a call as he's a helpful guy.

The entire HID kit fits inside the 993 headlamp casing, and the improvement from the 35W HID bulb over a standard 55W halogen is shocking! It's got to be one of the best upgrades to make to a 993.
There are downsides:
1, you'll be able to notice any beam misalignment - get those alan-keys out
2, the beam shape is unchanged, but more obvious to those you overtake - does anyone know of an auto-dimming mirror set for a 993?
3, you realise how poor high-beam is by comparison - you'll need to replace the high beam bulbs with the best standard bulbs you can find

I have a fitting guide that includes pictures (Maurice, I sent you a copy last year!). I'm happy to e-mail this as required.

Ian.

Hi

Thats great info thanks - emailed you for the installation instructions [:)]

One question, does this kit interfere with your radio reception? If so, is this on all/some frequencies and only when the lights are switched on or at all times?

Have heard that this is an issue with HID kits, but not sure on the specifics

Its not a big problem for me ( would rather see where I am going than crash listening to the radio..) but something I'd like to be aware of

Cheers

The system offered by Ace Parts seems very good. I had an Xenon upgrade fitted some three years ago. Needless to say the lights are now very good on low beam. My interest is noting the whole gubbins is contained within the light unit. Mine is not, the gubbins being lodged within the wing cavities behind the light units. This makes for a very fiddly task when removing/replacing the light units for whatever reason. I would be pleased to know if anyone experiences trouble with the beam correction levers when making adjustment for European driving after fitting Xenons. I have found adjustment next to impossible, having to resort to subtle masking of the lenses (which works well enough, but is a bit of a pain). If not I may be tempted to replace my existing system.I do get radio interference which I have not attempted to deal with because my night driving is limited. However with low beam running being introduced across parts of Europe I may be tempt to find a solution.

Hanhams,

I have these units, and I have had to take the ballasts out once in order to change the direction when I drove to the Nurburgring. It was a pain in the @rse to get the ballasts and the rest of the gubbins back in, but it gave me something to do on the ferry! It was a picture watching me and my mate sitting in the bar with a headlight unit each, both of us cursing the fact that it "almost" went in! []

The other issue is that the headlamp levellers no longer work. Not that I use them anyway.[8|]

Hi Guys,
Provided the HID ballast and control units do not foul the back of the reflector, and the light unit's electrical connectors are good, the levellers should work. It's best to place the components at the bottom of the back cover. The picture below shows this. The metal box part is bolted to the casing, and the plastic unit held in place by a cable tie around this, there is also a double sided sticky pad between the two units.

Hi Maurice,
I've mailed you a set of pictures and the notes I made about the fitment.

Many thanks to Ian Sabberton for his very fast response in sending me his illustrated idiot's guide. It worked and so do the lights. Shame about the main beams!
I found that one ballast was tapped for 4mm machine screw (B&Q M4x10mm) and the other over bored and threadless - so much for quality control. I used black screw cup covers (similar to those used on number plates) to weatherseal the three holes in the backs of the headlamp units and the M4 heads ftted exactly into the recesses.
The spade connectors which came with the kit fitted the earth and power connectors without any modification, so there was soldering either.
All-in-all a very worthwhile exercise
Thanks again

Hi Pete,
It's good to hear that the HID upgrade went relatively well for you. Isn't light great!

All the best,

Ian.

Hi

Was this Gerts kit or the one from AceParts (although I suspect they are the same..)

Just dropped mine off for the Indy to fit - along with Ians detailed instructions (going on holiday Saturday, and the car is in for MOT / Service anyway.. so thought I would ask them to do it)

Drove on the original dip beam last week, and reminded me why I had gone for the upgrade - looking forward to seeing where I am going..

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete,
It was Alan/Ace-Parts. Gert never responded to my enquiry!
Took car out last night to see the difference and have discovered that both beam adjuster have packed up - even though I can hear each motor trying to do the job. I suspect that the housing is too full of wiring and connectors....

OK - I am doing mine tomorrow!

If Ian's guide is available can someone send it to me at mahobbs@gmail.com please?

Looking at some of the pics and responses I am not sure if it is an easy or difficult thing to do! I suspect a bit like the bonnet 'keepy uppies' that were a breeze after I finally did it!

Cheers,

Mark

OK - struggling a little :-(

First question. When siting the ballast in the cover I noticed that some pictures show the bottom 'lugs' in the cover sawn off or removed somehow which gets the ballast as low as it can go. I want to avoid this action so does it work with the ballast above these lugs (not sure what else to call them!)

second question. In the back of the headlight there is a yellow and brown wire, yellow into bulb, brown into light surround. Do I simply remove these and plug them into the red and black spade connectors that come with the new units? This is the part I am most unclear on....

Haven't got the instructions so just sat here scratching my head a little!

Cheers,

Mark
