Carpets etc

Just looking at various projects on the new car to get it to how I want it. The bodywork is amazing given the mileage (or should I say kilometreage - 130k kms) and a proper detail should see this looking great (Zaff from Project Kharma in Bristol is seeing for the first time tomorrow). However, the interior needs a bit of TLC, especially the front carpets. I rang Bristol OPC today to get a quote for a full set of carpets and I nearly fell out of my chair - they totalled over £2500 before I told him to stop and I'd pick up the quote when I call in to get the cover!

So the question is, should I replace some/all of the carpets, or just get them looking the best I (or rather Zaff) can? If replacement, then they should probably be OEM, so does anyone have a source outside of the OPC network?

Finally, the dashboard has an annoying (in fact, very bl**dy annoying) squeak. Any recommendations as to someone to look at this (I'm based in Gloucestershire/Bristol)?

And just to put everyones mind at rest, the insurance has been arranged with Competition Car Insurance of Nottingham and includes track day cover, so it is going to get used as its maker intended - hopefully I'll see some of you at Castle Combe at the end of October.

Hi, I have a similar mileage and spec 993 rs (138k). Might be worth calling Southbound to get a quote. They stock the correct material and are very skilled. The pain is removing the old carpets as the original glue is v difficult to remove (steam is the best solution I believe)

thanks

Are you sure it is the dashboard squeeking rather than the infamous 993 windscreen creak/squeek? If you have an hour or two to spare you can busy yourself doing a search and reading postings here and especially on the 993 forum of Rennlist.com as to alleged 'fixes'.

After my screen was replaced I've never fully cured the replacement's creak, despite the car having the PTFE tape on the windscreen surround, the PTFE cord rammed in the gap, copious quantities of rubber lubricant/"Pedro's ice wax" periodically squirted under the rubber surround etc. Rather than have the replacement removed for a second time (I had it removed the first time to cure the corrosion at the bottom corners of the windscreen surround and to try (only partially succesfully) to cure the creak) I'm going to leave it. Next time the screen needs replacing I'll make sure I take the car to someone who really knows their onions to get the new one installed centrally with new seals. The current screen is a very slightly off centre and re-used at least the inner seal, so that is maybe contributing to the problem.

If it is the windscreen creak you have my sympathy - as you do if it is the dashboard of course. The known 'fixes' do ease the windscreen problem, so don't despair.

As for your grotty front carpet, if it is just the underfoot area can you not just get a set of new mats?

My prefrerence would be to go for a set of original carpets. Given the rarity of these cars today I would try and keep it as original as possible. I have found with expensive parts for my 993 RS, like new wheels etc try phoning several Porsche centres and negotiating with them. I got about 20% off a set of Speedline wheels this way.
