Carrera 2S, your thoughts please

Hello there

I've been looking at 993s for my brother for the last month or so and he has finally decided he would like a Carrera 2S. Saw a few cars this weekend and one in particular that we liked - 1997 P reg, midnight blue with grey leather, lots of options (inc 18" wheels, motor sound pack, climate, full leather, CD etc), 75k miles with full history (mostly OPC with last 2 at well know specialist incl £1500 for major service plus other bits 2 months ago). Car is in really fantastic condition and drives well. Brakes and tyres are good but as far as I can tell clutch is original (still feels ok though). Only minor cosmetic point is slight scuff on rear bumper and seller is having wheels refurbed today.

Questions I had were:
1. Is it a fair assumption that the clutch will need to be renewed soon and if so roughly how much would I pay at a good specialist.
2. Most of the 2Ss I have seen have had a round 50k miles on them. This is slightly higher but in excellent condition. Seller has all the main dealer and invoices since new (over £4.5k spent) and the specialist invoices (including £1500 in August). Is mileage a problem if well maintained?
3. What do you think I should pay for this given the higher mileage? I know there should be some adjustment for the extra miles (although they average at 10k per yr) and car will do low miles for the next few years so should even out a little.
4. Anything else I should look out for on these cars?

All feedback appreciated

Thanks

Hi
Well I have the same car except for the colour, and interestingly enough I have just had a quote for a new clutch plus 3 new heat shields at an opc and it was £2K. Needless to say. I am checking out other sources, so far ninemeister looks good. It is basically the difference between £80 an hour and £45.
It is the old problem, if you can't afford to run it then you can't afford to buy it. They do cost money. the big expense is tyres £650 for a pair of rears and £450 for a pair of fronts. Less if you know a man!!. Servicing at an opc is always going to be around £1K even though you can never imagine it will be when you go in.
That aside they are brilliant cars and worth every penny -- in my opinion. Price to buy, well currently the prices of good low mileage 993's are hardening quite a bit. Especially late C2S's .I guess mine with 76K miles on will still get around £30/35K. But that is only because it is mint.
Good luck, I am sure you will not regret it.
Peter

1. Very recently quoted 850 plus VAT at a good independent for clutch replacement. Add an extra 500 if the dual mass flywheel is gone.

If you are interested, my C2S is also up for sale - just email for further details.

I can't advise about clutch costs, but can tell you that the C2s is a stunning car. I've had mine for nearly a year and am very pleased with it. They don't have to cost masses to maintain. I recently had an annual service for under £300 at a very good independant. Tyres can also be bought at more reasonable prices than quoted above.

Purchase price is always related to mileage, but high mileage should not be a problem. Just get it checked out by a specialist before you part with any cash. Prices are very stronge for 993's at presant particaully the C2S. Indenpendant dealers are currently asking £43K for good example low mileage cars. I think that this is a little OTT and a car with 75k + miles should deffinatly be sub £35k and close to £30K.

I think that generally prices are about 10% higher that a year ago.

Buy it,, or certainly one off them

I have 1997 one 30kmiles in artic silver,,,and love it,,,,

tyres, paid £900 for full set of pirelli PZero Ross's last year,,,, rears dont last long !!!!

just have clutch done and flywheel,,,,,,,, had oil leak from main seal,, which damaged clutch and they said the dual mass fly wheel was in need of replacement,,,

had car back for couple of weeks now,, and dont really notice any major changes apart from much lighter clutch pedal.... cost... well still waiting on bill,,, but parts were £1000,,, and I expect labour to be £400 ish....

they are reasonable to service,,, £400ish,, its if anything needs sorting other than major main service...

I would have the car checked by and independant specialist and get them to give it a good looking over.... (not suggesting the OPC did'nt do his job) but they may have noted things to owner which are not mentioned in the service report......

mileage is ok for year of car,,, but if clutch original,,,, I would budget for a new one in the next year or so !

regards
Scott...

Thank you all for your feedback - deal has been done to allow for a few expected expenses. Should be picking the car up on Thursday evening. I expect the weekend will involve removing as much as I can from the car and a good clean.

Look forward to meetingup with some of you in the future.

May I say I would be amazed if it's still on the original clutch at 75,000 miles. Most of them last 50,000 miles on the button. I would therefore budget for a new clutch around 100,000 miles. You can tell by how much travel there is left, plus any slipping, stickiness etc.
