Carrera 4 GTS

Just curious. Haven't heard much about this car. No test drives in any magazines or on-line (not that we need test drives, the C4S platform is very familiar as is the X.51 powerkit). Has anyone ordered one?

Yes all the focus in now on the 991 but i'm interested in the C4 GTS as a future used car purchase. Visually, the 991 will not make the 997 look outdated (which is a good thing) but might make the C4 GTS good value for money in a couple of years.

There was a 2-page write up in Total 911, Issue 76, pp. 52-53.

They really liked it and rate it as 5 stars in their buyers guide - p. 93"¦ [:D]

Thanks. I have that issue. There are a few articles like this, using the press release photos and describing the spec. None of them have driven it.

They gave it 5 stars, gave the Carrera GTS 4 stars (which they probably have driven) and gave the Carrera 4S 3 stars !?!?!?

hi, i'm new to this forum but the reason I have joined is that I have ordered a 4 GTS and its due to arrive at the end of September. Reasons for my choice are:

The GTS has gone down a storm
The 997 model has everything I want from a 911
It will be used as a daily driver all year round and in some countries in europe where there is a lot of snow (so 4WD)
991 visually is not that different, say compared to 993 to 996
I like the mix of "standard" options on this run out variant

I'll post my post delivery thoughts when I get it!

Great to hear from you and great choice. The all weather ability is what would also attract me to a '4'.

Its always interesting to hear the spec and reasons for your choice of options.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Spec is:

  • Meteor grey (I like cars to look clean and this doesn't show the road grime to much)
  • Carrera sport wheels - I just like the classic look and don't want to be able to change from summer to winter tyres easily, i.e. not have to bother with the centrelocks)
  • Wheels in meteor grey rather than black (just to be a bit different)
  • Turbo II wheels with winter tyres
  • PDK and chrono +
  • Extra leather and alcantara
  • Guards red seat belts
  • Bose + nav + ipod + phone prep
  • Rear park assist
Think that's it from memory, oh, and roof bars and box for ski trips!!

Wow. You have a complete package [;)]

The May edition test drives the GTS Cab and says it rides better over poor road surfaces than other 997 cabs they have tested and they wonder if Porsche has made some chassis tweaks compared to other 997 Carreras despite Porsche saying they haven't. They don't attribute this to the centre lock wheels which Porsche says "Compared with the conventional five-bolt wheel connection, it offers enhanced driving dynamics and performance thanks to the reduction in rotating masses." I do like the centre lock wheels though, but can understand anyone opting out for the reasons you give.

Have you had a 997 previously, to compare it to?

It will be my first porsche! I've driven both 2S and 4S back to back to compare (and yes did notice a difference in terms of the 2WD being a bit lighter at the front). I'm coming from an Audi A6 quattro as my daily but for fun I also have an '85 Ferrari 308GTB and a '59 MGA. Hopefully daily drives will now be as enjoyable as my recreational driving! Who knows, if I get the 911 bug I could see a 964 coming in the future (I just like them for some reason).

Sounds like a fun garage you have there. Be difficult to know which keys to pick up on the way for a drive on a weekend!

Hope you enjoy the GTS - great car (in my limited experience).

I have a Carrera GTS PDK as a loan vehicle for the weekend. Great car! Seemed pretty docile at first, with the gearbox in normal mode. In Sport and Sport Plus mode the car comes alive! Sport Plus can be a bit manic when the traffic slows down, with all the gear changes at the red line, but switching to manual mode is a good compromise to keep the sharper throttle response but control the gear changes when traffic is a bit slow.

I remember reading that because the GTS uses the wide body shell, the boot is still small despite being RWD. However, I thought the wide body and narrow body were the same at the front. Can anyone explain why it wasn't easy for Porsche to put the Carrera 2S innards in the front of the GTS so that the boot space would not be reduced, given that there are no AWD mechanicals at the front wheels to take up space?

P.S. I do know that Sport Plus is for the race track but I obviously want to try everything whilst i've got it. I return it tomorrow. It has been an enlightening experience into the capabilities of PDK and of course the 911. The handling is noticably different to my Cayman S, being a bigger car and with different weight distributon, but I have gotten used to it by trusting that the grip is equal to the power.
