Can anyone detail the engine and general differences between Type 954 the 1983 > - 911SC RS rear wheel drive rally car - and the 1984-86 Carrera 4x4 Type 953 - all wheel drive rally car - apart from the drive systems is the Carrera 4x4 based on the 3.2 Carrera or is it still based around a bored out 911 SC RS? Little literature seems to be available about this car although there are some pictures in this months Christophorus.

Hey Bones

The 953 is a pet project of mine. If you look back through the last couple of years in PPost you'll find my article on the car. It was developed in late '83 by Jacky Ickx and managed by Porsche head of sport development, Peter Falk.

It is a 3.2 Carrera. There were only 3 built. It used a stock 3.2 litre engine producing over 300 bhp and came 1st, 6th and 26th in the 1984 Paris to Dakar.

I have a chapter about this car in my book - if you can wait until January?

The 953 was born from the 954 - it was effectively a 4x4 version of the SC RS. The 4x4 system (manually operated on the 953) went on to provide the basis for the 959. In official Porsche production numbers, the 953 is listed under 'E' as a 911 Coupe code 10, chassis numbers 0020, 21 and 22. The 954 however, is shown as a 911 Carrera but coded as 11 where 20 are shown as being built in MY 1984, also under the 'E' programme - chassis numbers 0001 to 0021.

These are great competition 911s. The SC RS was much more widely used and had many race successes. The 953 only appeared once but did the job intended by Porsche.

Does that answer your question?

I received my copy of Christophorus last night and now understand what you are referring to.

Notably, the 1984 car is referred to as a Carrera 4x4 - Klaus Bishoff and I have had some ongoing disagreeemnt about the name as it appeared previously in Christophorus. We agreed to differ, but now he referres to it as a Carrera - perhaps he took my wisdom on board?

One error - the HP at 225 is incorrect - Ickx himself quotes 330 BHP.

Interestingly the 1985 raid was a looser for Porsche, using the 959 with 3.2 power plant - pulled it all right again for 1986 with the turbo 959.

Nice cars - I will ask Klaus if he can get a three car line-up photograph for me SCRS/Carrera 4x4/959 - could be good.
