Carrera GT purchase

I am about to finalise the purchase of a GT and have taken a good look over it and it appears to be an honest car, but I would like to know what members think I should look for?
Typical rust areas?
Hard to find trim or components I should make certain are in good order?

For example the struts holding up the rear window/deck are shot - but at the moment I assume they are reasonably easy to get hold of. Am I right?

Any comments will be gratefully received

Check chassis number, should be WPOZZZ93ZBN7 (8) xxxxxx, or WPOZZZ93ZCN7 (8) xxxx.
93 is model, with N for Neckarsulm assembly followed by the third model number, 7 for left and allegedly 8 for right hand drive CGT s. The B or C refer to the year of manufacure, off the top of my head B is the year letter for 1981, and I have seen a 1982 registered car somewhere.

There will be the very obvious intercooler, centrally mounted oil cooler and flush screen.

The standard 924 turbo is very unsympathetic towards first gear, especially if there is the slightest amount of clutch drag.

Check for corrosion around the front jacking beam point. When weak, the floor distorts leading to a sticking throttle pedal.

Tailgate struts no problem. Might want to think 944 due to the extra weight of the 944 sized rear spoiler, but without my PET cd to hand I can't say if they are even different.

Almost certainly seat covering material will be unobtainable

Other than that bloody good luck. I use my 924t as a dailly driver now that I have the 944 turbo cab, and the 924 is immense fun putting lots of modern machinery and certain lowered, dustbin exhausted and almost certainly re-chipped Golf VR6s to shame.

Assuming 944 ones are suitable - I replaced mine a year or so back for < £20 a side.

Forgot to say good luck with the new car [:)] Happened upon a silver GT about 4 years ago - the guy I bought my wife's Merc off had one under a sheet in his garage which he kindly showed me when he found out I was a pcar nut (actually, I think he was trying to sell it to me as he was emigrating with his family). Fantastic car.

I have been crawling under it today and looking everywhere and I am amazed what good condition it is in for 81 car.
1st - geear well said that man - it did crunch until I got used to the clutch and did a double de clutch on the way down
oohhhhh - they do pick up speed don't they

We its a done deal - It is mine - unfortunately for the sticker price but I do get it Waxoyled, serviced, MoT'd and 6 months tax as well as 6 months return if anything wrong.

So I see a couple of thosuand miles comming up.

It should be quicker than a 944 s2 with only 2 hp less and less weight to carry. Yes they do pick up speed quickly.
 
Hi, bit of a novice with 924's, Is there any chance that there are any 924 GT engines out there for sale? Any specialists that may be able to help?

I would doubt that you will find one. If you did the fact that it was genuine would make it horrendously expensive.

Unless you need it for a genuine 924GT it may be better to build one using a series 2 Turbo, they are very similar and not too expensive on ebay. You could even exceed the basic GT specification. The main thing that you would need to find is the intercooler.
 
Thanks, I thought it may be tough. The car in question needs a rebuild and the owner basically also needs a new head, most of these parts are available at Porsche but the head alone comes to £3,000+ complete ready to bolt on!.. Annoyingly not even Porsche sell the turbo, oil cooler, most of the exhaust not even tappets for it anymore!...

 
Try an Audi dealership for the tappets or Berlyn services or Porscheshop. I got a very nice set from EBAY for £80 a couple of years ago, a bargain when you consdider the retail price in 1992 was £36 + vat per tappet.

I had the cam belt go on mine but the damage was limited to three tappets and three bent valves. It is all back together now and thundering.

I would have thought the bigger issue with the CGT is the hybrid turbo charger running at higher boost, which is really where the CGT gets its oomph from. This in turn necessitates the intercooler to prevent detonation. I have the exact details in one of the sevice manuals so dont shoot me but I think it is
series 1, 170 ponies 0.75 bar boost 8.0 :1 cr
series 2, 177 gee gees 0.7 bar boost 8.5:1cr
CGT 210 bhp 0.8 bar boost 8.5:1 cr

How dead is the head?
 
The head is not too bad but I was hoping to at least get tappets!..

With Porsche not doing varoius parts I dont know how they think these cars can be repaired and kept on the road?

Can't even get an ignition control unit or crank pulse sensors!...

I think that the crank sensors are the same as the Turbo, anyone know if these can be found?
 
I have searched in vain on the web. I got one from ebay once which proved to be of no use to the member I procured it for. However, if there are any bad connections to the ecu from the multiplug it can seem like the end of the world with popping banging and an abject refusal to rev. I cant see why they fail. Mine is 25 years old and going strong, although it does seem to play up if the flywheel gets too hot. Search breakers yards for audi 100's 1978 vintage, or lt 28 vans, or try one of the Porsche recycling businesses of which there are many advertised.
For repair of the ICU contact S.A.M.E.S in Southend who have told me over the phone that as Bosch agents they can get ECUs repaired in Milton Keynes for a reasonable price but whether that extends to the ICU in the 924 I don't know, but a phone call is cheap.
 
Mike. As the new owner of one of these rare cars may I ask you a couple of questions ?
I have read in a Porsche book that the Carrera has "lightweight trim", "black felt trim" or somesuch.

(Or is that just the Carrera GTS ? Can any 924 expert comment ?)

In my area of motorsport I am only allowed to make certain changes.
MSA rule reads :- "Any car which has been improved within the manufacturers specification for the range will be considered as Production."
As I intend lightening the car as much as possible it would be interesting to know the details of lightweight or even discarded trim ( rear seats ?).
I am 99% sure that I can use plastic side windows and rear hatch.

These are unobtainable but Porscheshop informed me a years ago that they have an answer. Ring them.
 
The DITC in the CGT is a Siemens unit.

There is no ROM inside, only a few discrete components, so it should be rebuildable.

Indeed and S.A.M.E.S. in Southend have a line on getting them repaired in Milton Keynes. Beware not all DITC units are the same, the official Porsche manual lists about five or six diferent part numbers. Nice one Geoff on finding out that Porscheshop have got a solution.
 
Hey guys - I get so embarrassed when this thread comes to the top again.
All the views mean that people think I was going to buy something that has purple leather cup holders!!
Can I get this locked - I will start a new CGT thread
 
I don't know why you think that. Anyone taking an interst on the 924 forum who doesn't know what a 924 carrera gt is, is just a little bit too self absorbed with their 911. Why lock the thread? I say leave it open and damn their purple cup holders.
