cassette arm rest repair

since I bought my S2 in May the centre console cassette cover hinge has been broken. It has driven me sucidal slipping about all over the place whenever I drive it so tonight I thought I'd do a tempoary fix whilst waiting for a replacement .It may be crude but it works and will probably outlast the car..Fortunately it is invisable until opened and as I only use it to store fone and keys and loose change its ok for me

I just bought a strip of `piano' hinge from B & Q and cut a biy to fit.( I have since seen some nice brass stuff)
Pre-drilled the screw holes with a 3mm pilot drill and screwed the hinge to the cover with self-tappers then did the same to the centre console . Hinge catch still works fine and its firmly fixed .

I might get a nice brass strip with some nice shiny new brass screws and replace this repair .It might look ok when properly finished

This whole console is frankly rubbish quality. I can't think what Porsche were thinking about when they fitted these except some vain attempt to cut down on overall weight. They are simply vacumn moulded plastic without even foam filling reinforecment unspeakable c**p. I am seriously thinking of sourcing a volvo armrest or some other decent quality item Rover maybe (shudder)

You can source replacement ones still or there are various alternatives around to replace what I agree is a dismally un Porsche bit of pathetic engineering - I went for one which ditches the whole hinged lid concept for an open and flat replacement tray with no lid - ideal for oddment storage of phone, coins etc plus a couple of can size holders at the back. came from one of the aftermarket suppliers - (type911?) - stick 944 cassette lid into google and you'll find it. Works well, looks good, matches and is unbreakable - plus who has cassettes anyway these days

I saw one for sale at the Tipec show last year for £20 so I offerd £15 and as it was cream leather matching my trim I was well pleased[:)]

quite ! I tossed mine out ages ago but then I'm not too keen to have all my rubbish on show sweet wrappers and mobile fone ect plus I definitly need the arm rest. I find it a useful support point to manoever my seating position and essential to rest my arm during long journeys. (heavy arms lol) [:D] without the extra storage I tend to put the mobile on the seat from where it always slides off under the seats somewhere Grrrrrr
