CASTOR MOUNTS

Decided to change my drivers side castor mount as there seems to be movement which may be causing a knock so when i started to loosen the main bolts which look as though they go inside part of the chassis structure one bolt was undoing fine but the other i was undoing seemed to be floating about as though there was a captive nut on the other side which had maybe broken from its weld or are there nuts (like me ) and i cant find them
Thanks Bob

Captive nuts if I remember correctly, you may need a cutting disc and a welder...

A welded plate inside the panel/chassis IIRC, It is easily stripped out A common problem especially the Inboard one

helicoils would be my first approach, then oversize timeserts

If i slacken the bolt a few turns it just seems loose but i cant push the bolt up are they welded to the metal or contained in a fixture of somekind

The bolt will loosen and retighten so i dont think anything is stripped all i am thinking is if i remove the bolt completely will nut/plate move and then when i refit will i not be able to relocate the bolt

I read somewhere that the bolt is self tapping, Perhaps using a prybar under the head while unscrewing it would work.

I was trying to do this in my pit but i,m thinking if the bolt comes out and i cant put the new mount back in i,m in the deep shite as then i cant move the car so had a word with my Merc mate who has a lift and is a good welder in case it needs open surgery and he is going to do it maybe tomorrow

Good plan, he could open the hole up and tack a threaded bush or nut in if it's fubar'd.

Probably stating the obvious but disconnect the battery if welding on the car, I'd unplug the ECU too.

I stripped mine when fitting a cross brace. The stated torque settings were somewhat more enthusiastic than was possible. In the end I replaced the top mounts with roller bearing jobbies which were cheaper than the standard replacement.
