Castrol SLX - Discuss

When I had my last service done they filled me up with Castrol SLX ... is this a good, bad or indifferent thing? I have always sworn by Castrol products, GTX being my oil of choice back some years. Let me know what you think?

Mike, you'll need to provide a bit more info on the actual Castrol SLX oil that was used as there appear to be several different versions under the name Castrol SLX.

From what i've been able to gather, this is a fully synthetic engine oil (as as Mobil 1) and is very expensive (more so than Mobil 1).

Anyway, on a related note, here is a link to one of the most comprehensive write-ups on engine oil that I have ever seen:

The Owners Manual is a bit vague on specific oils as Mike suggests but does state the following (for a MY03 2.7 and 'S'):

Oil for winter and summer
=================

Above -10C
--------------
SAE 5W-30, 10W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40, 10W-40 and higher.

Below -10C
-------------
SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40, 5W-50

Engine oils approved by Porsche
=====================
- All oils on the Porsche approval list
- Oils of viscosity 0W-40, 5W-40, 10W-40 and higher if they comply with the ACEA A3 specification.
- Oils of viscosity 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 if they are included in the Porsche approval list.

The manual also says that you would need to contact an OPC for details of the Porsche approval list (as this changes from time for time I guess).

Clear as mud!
