Hi,
The cat bypass is effectively a straight through pipe which replaces the original catalytic converter. The theory is that it substitutes a resticted pipe (i.e. the cat) with an unrestricted pipe (i.e. the bypass) hence reducing the energy losses and therefore providing a small power boost.
The use of the word "bypass" is a bit of a misnomer since it really REPLACES the cat rather than bypass it - but there you go!!
It's only legal on pre-'92 cars since thereafter a cat is a legal requirement.
