Cats!

Hi there!

This may sound like a really silly question but I have had a thought, my exhaust (88 2.5 8v lux) is a bit nosiy not in a blowing type way but it rattles when tapping the gas, I know this could either be one or two things, the baffles in one of the boxes or the Cat!

Now I have not been under my car, so would it actually have a CAT? if so can it be removed? I think that pre 88 cars with a CAT removed would fail an MOT? also am I right in thinking that I would lose a bit of torque due to decreased back pressure? In fact would there be any benefit at all? other than saving a ton of cash replacing it?
Kind regards
Chris

I think that you don't have a cat as my car is a May 89 and it don't have one. Aug 89 and onwards had cats. Not sure what the rattle will be have a machanice check it out.

Thankyou very much, I don't think it is any thing serious, just irratating! I will have a proper look underneath this weekend presuming that the weather is ok, and bang the boxes a bit! I am not sure if there are any heat shields on the exhaust, and I know that these make a horrible noise if a little lose!

Has the Wurth arrived yet! I'm getting the seals rubbed down and resprayed in the summer just after the wheels get refurbished.
If there was nothing to fix/repair then i'd be bored with the car [:D]

My car is an '88 and has the "cat-delete" option, which would suggest that cats were fitted as standard, unless this option was specified.
I think that cats are only obligatory from about K-reg onwards (not sure exactly), so you dont have to have one, but if one is fitted then it does have to work.

Andriko,
Well on Saturday I am taking her to the recomended guy that resprayed someones nose cone(On here), to get a quote, (I think he is near Luton!), Then I will decide firstly if it is a job that I am feeling confident with, or whether I will pay someone to do it. I must admit I have done much body work before and have got some good results, but I feel a little scared because she is a Porsche, and not a ford! Watch this space, However I went on a great american site that was really useful, I am sure you know it, Clarkes Garage, but they were all talking about rebores and oversized pistons, which is a little out of my depth, but the funny thing is that people in the states seem to have loads of oil pressure problems, and non starters, compared to this site, strange!

I will have a look under her at the weekend, and check to see if she has a CAT, I am thinking; if that is the cause of the noise as mentioned it may be more cost effective to remove it, via a de-cat pipe, have to see, than replace it, I am just a little worried about less mileage, MOT failure and decrease in torque if back pressure is an option, but thank you for your responses,

No probs, I am getting a quote on complete work of the seals, spraying boths doors and a general tidy up of spots chips and parking door dents, I will of course let you know, I am coming from Essex which is far but I think that either a spray job can make things ten times worse if done badly or ten times better if done correctly!
Have a great weekend, I think it will definately be a roof off weekend, Yeah!
