cayenne battery probs

For the second time of late I left the KN for 3/4 weeks without hooking up the battery conditioner.
Dead as a Dodo .The problem is that the car will not turn over with a standby fully charged battery connected via the terminals under the bonnet. However the battery will charge up via these terminals (about 2 days).
Can anyone explain why it will charge but not jump start ? My OPC said today that it might be that all the power from the standby battery is being absorbed by the flat unit ? ?

It may be that you have some crappy old crocodile clips that will allow a small current to pass through the 'Jump' connection, but when you try to draw say 100 amps for the starter motor to turn the engine then the clip connections are just not up to the job.

You may find that if you rotate the clips back and forth on both of the battery terminals then the spikes on the clips will form a 'Clean' contact and full current can be drawn through your ancient set of jump leads !!!

This is just a theory of mine as I confess to never having sight of your Jump leads !

No they are a really top class set of Jump Leads Tony.
I went to a M/cycle club meeting last night and one of the members has some sort of Mitsubishi
with the jump lead terminals under the bonnet. He reckons he has the same problem but if he hooks the positive up to the Battery and the Neg to the engine it will crank ok.Unfortunately I cannot test his cure. Does this make sense to you or anyone ? I passed this on to my OPC today and asked them to consult the Teck man .At least I have a kick start on the bike ..............!

It is not unusual not to turn the engine over when jump starting from a donor battery connected, you must have the engine running on the donor vehicle to give it the extra volts required. Not sure if you have tried this?

Kevin, it may be that the underbonnet terminals have corroded a bit and your 'Decent' jump leads are still not making proper contact.

Maybe a good clean up of the terminals would help ?

The same goes for the terminals on the Donor battery.

Chris no the standby battery is not on a car but is new and is always on the optimate unlike the one on the KN
I must make sure i connect a conditioner every time i have to go off .

Thanks Tony. It all seems to be corrosion free and Lindbrook had it in a few months ago when i had the same problem. (Remember my post re the internal lights not going out?) That was corrected.Normally when i take her to europe i load the spare battery and jump leads as i live in fear of the car not starting when i need to drive off the Eurotunnel train.Seems it would not start in an emergency anyway so i may as well leave them in the uk.
It would be helpful to know the answer to the problem.I will let you know if Lindbrook come back with anything.
Meantime how about leaving your headlights on all night to run your battery flat and see if yours will jump start the next day ?

My point was that you to do a jump start properly you must use a donor vehicle with the negine running so that the donor battery is being fully charged (at 13.8 v, not 12v ) when you try to start your Cayenne. I doubt it will start just swapping the battery over.

Hi Guys well I am away again but I hooked up the KN to a new Optimate 3 plus.
Whats the betting the aupair switches it off to save Leccy ! !

Well it failed to start again this morning and this time it has not been standing around.
However i think it must be something to do with the Ign Switch as after only an hour on a cheapo
charger she started but with an awful lot of clicking and clanging at the switch ? Do you think if it was plugged into the
Computer at the OPC it would tell them if there was a problem in this area ?

Sounds like the auto electrician at the OPC should take a look. Could be a leak somewhere, KN's have a bit of a reputation for dodgy electrics. I've only had the expiring battery before, fine with a new one. Current car good after nearly three years.

Unfortunately Peter i have bought 2 new Vartas one this year and one last thinking that last years must have been duff when she would not start a few months ago but the old battery charged up fine and i keep it that way but when i cant jump start it, it was a waste. After today i am beginning to think it is nothing to do with the battery and something to do with the starting mechanism but goodness knows how you would find an intermittent fault and at what cost at £100 an hour or so .?
Does anyone think a 105 amp battery could run down overnight with say one or 2 lights in the cab left on ?

Dont know wher you are based, but came across this thread on Auto elec technicians... may help if there local to you??

Down in Kent
My OPC has had it in and no joy.
The OPC at Burgess Hill recons it would show up if it was hooked up to the computer.
However if the fault is intermittant how would that show up ?

With a recurrance of the problem i returned to the thread and noticed you did not hear the end of the story
(provisional) it seems
The car went into a good independant who could not find any abnormal drain on the battery when standing idle.
I have since made sure the Optimate is connected .The garage said that there is far more drain when standing if
the car is not locked. After a long drive up thru Europe recently I parked her up for 5 Five days only and the battery was dead when i tried to start the engine .I had not locked the car
So make sure you lock your car.I am however not convinced that all is well with the car but as long as i can plug the trickle
charger in seems i should be OK.
Just a small point
The reading on the Ampmeter on the dash, when it is showing 14 does that mean it is charging at that rate or does it
indicate the state of the battery ? ?
