Cayenne Diesel When?

With the fabulous performance of the VW Toureg V10 Diesel, it must only be time before Porsche complete the line up and embrace the entire 4X4 market here and more so Europe....particularly as they now have the VW 3.2 petrol in the line up. The Cayenne V10 would be a huge winner.
 
Do VW actually sell any of the V10 versions though?
I can't quite see why you would want one.

For sporty types, the Cayenne turbo is the way to go (beats an Impreza WRX round Bedford Autodrome according to Evo).
For less sporty types there is the V6 version.
For more frugal and mud plugging types, I could see a market for a smaller diesel version, but not a monster one.

More of an issue would be product positioning - people had a fit when Porsche said they would do a truck, think of the fuss if they said they were going diesel.
There would be even more fuss if they bought the technology in (since unless there are up to some secret development, they have no in house diesel capability).
Besides, a rattly old bag of spanners in a washing machine, is hardly the engine note worthy of the Porsche crest, together with the cloud of carcinogenic black smoke.

Having said all this I suspect it is all just a matter of time.

More of a question is "How big should Porsche become?". What is the "correct" number of cars to sell.
 
At the end of the day if enough customers want a diesel then Porsche will build one regardless of general public opinion, it's a bussiness.

Would anyone not buy a boxster or 911 because porsche build a diesel ? ...... No

Also with the current turbo diesel technology, give it 5 years and they will be quicker than the same petrol powered car.

If anyone has driven the new mercs they already are !!!

I have an old school diesel (Nissan Patrol 4.2) and it offers certain advantages for a 4x4 - lots of low down torque for towing (and pulling tree stumps out of the ground - seriously) and it doesn't mind being submerged in water (well other than the air intake),

Because Porsche is a business run by Accountants. Who would have thought only a few years ago a Porsche 4X4 SUV.............they are now firmly in the 4X4 market with probably the best.....and what percentage of 4X4 SUV are Diesel overall here and Europe?, this is a guess but must be 90% plus. So there is your answer....European Market is going mad for the Diesel Cayenne. Just think of the more changeable climate, different terrains, Motorway Networks, Much Cheaper Diesel............a business man in Paris would not think twice to do a day return trip of 500 miles, especially in a Cayenne. Yes massive market Europe, but not so much the States....probably the reason why they launched into the Big Turbo and S straight away.....now for Europe I give you the Cayenne V10.

Oh did I mention the Irish Farmers.........even cheaper Diesel........

I could go on it will happen soon or my name is Michael Schumacher![;)]

My bet is still on a Cayenne V8 diesel using the Audi V8 currently in development.
 
Reading this thread with interest; my bet is that they'll use the V10 as per Tourag. They're already using / going to use the VW V6, so obvoiusly there's no issue in plundering somebody elses parts bin and putting a new badge on it. The chassis is already set up for using the V10 engine, I don't think they'll be in a hurry to re-engineer and put the V8 in it, I can see a possible marketing issue relative to the Tourag with that one.
Emissions aside, that will be sorted over the comming years, bring on the Cayenne Diesel...... I see there's too much snobery towards Diesel in the UK. If the taxation levels were the same her as they are in the rest of mainland Europe I'd bet many people would put aside there preconceptions about oil burners and join the club!!
 
They will first launch the Cayenne Diesel in Europe and underpin it with strong European demand/sales then UK, but in this instance maybe not the USA..........as a SUV it has to have a diesel option.........
 
If they use the V10 as per the toerag they will completly b***er the handling. The engine is VERY heavy, its like carrying 3 extra people on the bonnet all the time.
After original scepticism I have embrassed the Cayenne as a Porsche - because of how it drives and feels but unless they intend to re-introduce a range of tractors I will still struggle with the idea of a diesel. If Porsche do succumb then it must match MB's 4litre alloy V8 - which they still don't sell in this country(I think).

Audi V8 TDI .......??? Would not take much to tweak it to suit a heavier cars torque requirements. Would end up sitting under the S but above the V6 in terms of performance and power, prob sit closer to the S than the V6 in cost and Porsche wins with even more profit!
 
Cayenne SD it is........with Audi power.......let's see how Porsche do it, maybe they are monitoring this very thread for on the grouind guidance!
