Cayenne on Track

Out of curiosity, do any of you guys take your Cayenne to the track. I was at brands hatch a little while ago and I spoke to a guy there who said he had taken is on track regularly. He said he had surprised the regular track day boys with is Cayenne keeping up with 911's......

I am taking my CTT08 always on the track and it is absolute amazing what you can do with her (with our without PSAM[;)]). Often I get compliments from my fellow 911 drivers about the shear speed. On the straight I regularly pull away when the twin turbos kick in. I have the caymans for breakfast, even on the twisty bits !!! My next track day is on the 14th of May at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi again. Brilliant driving !!!! I would definitely recommend taking the Cayenne on the track (preferably a turbo, with PDCC and PCCB, I don't have PCCB though the normal breaks do fine. Have the break fluid changed as you need good breaks (the fluid always absorb some moister and with the breaks heating up you can get break fade fast).

Sounds like a great drive. The Cayenne is such an achievement from Porsche. Poto's and video look great!

My requirements from a Cayenne are very different from yours. I don't need speed and will not often be driving over sand dunes, though roadholding and economy are important. Have you driven the Hybrid or the new diesel? Comments?
 
I did a couple of driving days in the old Cayennes (Turbo and S) - on-road, off-road and on-track. Certainly clever for such a big truck, but I could never find any affection for it.

However the new one looks far more interesting. Saw it at the Geneva Show - much better looking design, superb interior, lighter, apparently nicer to drive with improved handling and ride, and far better economy and running costs.

With its practical, luxury, sporting credentials, it could well be the next 'must have' SUV.

Hybrid looks interesting, but pricey. Diesel will be the most popular. Big V8s might appeal to some, but an increasing anachronism IMO.

Think the launch is later this month.
 
Yes I agree. I think I will go for the diesel as the hybrid is pricey, less economical to run and hybrid technology is still in its infancy.

I think the diesel will be economical enough to run as an everyday car.

Swindon OPC launch is on 27 May.

I am not sure if the Cayenne is the 4x4 you are looking for my friend. OK the 'new' one has improved fuel efficiency but I wouldn't be surprised that the V8's still gussle in the region of 18 UK MPG (normal driving, city/highway). I am on average as low as 10-12 MPG but again with fuel here at 10pence per liter, I don't have to worry.

The diesel Cayennes are not in the ME, so I cannot comment, however a friend of mine was very positive about his Cayenne diesel in UK, not sure what MPG he will get. IMO, if you can afford the price tag of a Cayenne Turbo, you can also afford to fill it up. The car is a shear joy to drive and no other 4x4 comes close to the performance referring to the turbo and turbo S models. OK you probably say, what about the X6, indeed great car but doesn't have the finnesse of the Porsche (again IMO) having had the X5 as well.

Referring to the Hybrid, nice gimmic and good Porsche have one available as well. Have a look at the reviews, the test drives couldn't get it above 17MPG, so if hybrid is the solution, IMO definitely not. In the end power stations will need to supply the electricity, the ever ongoing discussion.

I thought the new Cayenne wasn't yet in production - just a few early examples to give the press and OPC staff a limited introduction.

I believe production starts this month, with the official launch at the end of May and the full independent road tests filtering through over the next few weeks.

Yes, it will be interesting to see the actual economy figures.
