Cayenne Tyres - your experiences

Hi
My Continental sport contact 4 x 4s are now close to the tread wear indicators on my Cayenne S (19.5K mileage) they have been past there best on the front outer edges for a little while now.
Phoning around the best replacement all in deal is £187 on Pirelli P Zero Rossos N rated in the 275 45 by 19 size, Contis are £217 each.
Last winter the back end on Contis were all over the place in heavy rain and light snow.
Any chance of your tyre thoughts before I commit to the Pirellis

Many thanks

Paul

Had Continentals originally, now Pirelli Pzero Rosso for summer Scorpions for winter. Huge improvement, Rosso's are quieter, grip better and are wearing at least as well. Scorpions are brilliant grip is good, wear reasonable although the edges suffer badly with dry tarmac use, but will keep both and hope they don't all need changing at once! All these in 18's.

I can't remember what the original set of tyres were but after 19K were ready for a new set. Went for Bridgestone, and they have been great. After about 19K again they still appear to have a 3 or 4 K in them. Will replace with the same. Total cost last time was about £550.00. Wouldn't fancy paying nearly £900.00"¦"¦"¦.

Normal UK road tyres are generally suited to mild UK conditions are best described as Summer tyres. This is what most UK delaer cars come with. These are also expensive high speed-rated tyres, which some may decide they don't need to retain when changing tyres. But make sure you think about it if you plan to drive fast on M-ways, etc.

These summer tyres are no better on a Cayenne than any other car in the ice, snow and very wet.

I would recommend a winter tyre in the colder months if you want to have any noticeably better performance in extreme condition.

Invariably this means having two sets of wheels.

So no easy inexpensive answer to this.

19k miles is very good considering the weight of the car. 12-15k is the average in my experience across the register. Shoulder on the front is usually the area that wears first.

Hi guys,

Our Cayenne S now has 14k miles and the front tyres have worn terribly on the outside edge. Is there really no solution to this? I have had the tracking, balance etc checked by the main dealer and they say it is all within normal tolerances.

I'm not entirely sure if they are illegal or not - what are the rules regarding tyres with low tread just on one side? The rest of the tyres look almost new.

I was thinking about PZero Rosso's as replacements and www.blackcircles.com seem to be very reasonable on price (can arrange fully fitted at your local tyre centre).

Thanks for any advice. Greatfully received.

Well I went for the Pirellis and when the Contis came off I was shocked at how little tread was remaining on the back although apart from outer edges being shiney on the front there was a good 4-5mm of tread over the remaining 75% of the tread width (19.5K) . Done about 500 miles on the new tyres so have taken it easy breaking them in so can't report on handling but have noticed that they are a softer ride over our lincolnshire pot holed roads. Whoever says 4x4s aren't required in the UK should travel the roads I do especially around suger beet harvesting in Nov/Dec

I am now looking for tyres for wife's Touareg smoker and everybody is recommending Hankooks but having problems finding a dealer who stocks them.

Well - I was amazed!!

My local ATS supplied 4 x 275,45,19's for the KN and 4 x 225,45,17's for the V70 - all top end Michelins for £1100 all in (including wheel alignment!). An average of £137.50 per tyre.

Considering the cost of the 19" tyres normally, I'd say I had a good deal.

ATS in Ringwood, Hampshire if anyone is in the area.
