Cayenne - which one?

Having now sold the 993 the question was what to get next. Drew up a short list which was blown out of the water by the fact that my daughter did not fit in the rear seats or the drive was not as engaging as the 993.

So after a lot of head scratching rather surprised myself by arranging a test drive of a Cayenne Turbo. What a revelation! Then don't need to tell this part of the forum!

Best way to describe the experience is that I few the car as a hybrid, 4x4 in comfort or normal mode then pop it into sport and this thing defies what a 4x4 does.

Was so taken, arranged a test drive of a 4,5S this afternoon and although fast not as exiting as the turbo, so looks like my next car is going to be a turbo, although if I could come up with an S that has been specced up to turbo standard, would be happy with that.

So the short list is now........a Cayenne! This coming from somebody who has thought that Porsche had sold out to the american market and Cayenne drivers were, well best not to go there!!![:D]

Are there any problems I should look out for or are they generally reliable?

William,
Good choice with a growing family. Have been through the usual Merc estates, Volvo(!) estates, Chrysler Grand Voyager (underrated IMO), but then we have four kids. Now they're older don't need more than five seats, (one lfet home, one at university) the Cayenne came along at the right time for us.

Our S is now three years old, done 55k and has been reliable. Couple of early niggles fixed under recalls and a suspension bush at the MOT is all to report.

Found the performance of the S good enough considering the trade off on fuel consumption compared with the Turbo. Average just short of 20mpg which is not too bad if you say it quick.

Pleased enough to have put in an order for the facelift S in the Spring.

Look at old postings for other people's experiences, one or two forum members had a catalogue of problems, mostly electrical. However, when these are fixed, a good choice. They make terrific second hand buys, of course.

Beware of fuel consumption in the Turbos if you have a heavy foot have heard of stories of single figures for mad men and 12/14mpg for the sane. Speaking to Ray Northway Saturday he may have a sub £30k(by £5) V8 car arriving this week. If you go for a Turbo there 1st year depreciation is horrendous, so go secondhand and you can pick a 04 model for under £45k.

Thanks for the replies.

It is interesting that fuel consumption is mentioned as an issue as according to the tech specs the Turbo is only 1 mpg worse than the S. Is this a case of real world against paper figures?

Out of interest, are there other Cayenne forums? Obviously know about Rennlist!

Joining the ranks of the Cayenne owners as I should be picking up my Turbo tomorrow, as long as the 20" sport techno wheels arrive in time[:D]

Cannot wait!

Both! Curious to know what colour/extras/suspension package was available. Assume it is pre-owned given the speed you got it sorted?

Peter,

Standard Turbo spec in Titanium/black leather combo with 20" Sport Techno wheels; Electric towbar; servotronic; telephone module for PCM (no handset); multi-function steering wheel inc phone; privacy glass; 6 disc CD changer
