Cayman 20" tyres

Ralph, I don't think its a question of being a Cayman, all 20 inch Carrera wheels whether destined for a 991, Cayman or Boxster are shod with Pirellis. My own experience with this make on my 987.2 Cayman was that they wear very quickly, I got less than 8000 mls out of the rears before replacement. Apart from that they grip very well. How did you find them on the track day? Chris

The fronts are 'scuffed'. At this rate they won't last long so I will need to decide what to do then. Not sure what the implications of non-'N' rated tyres would be but have near 3 years before any warranty renewal and it would be interesting to hear what warranty claim might be challenged on the basis of a non 'N' rated tyre - would discuss with insurer though.

I wouldn't consider fitting anything other than the Pirelli N rated on a more or less new car. I had to get one of mine replaced due to a pot hole blow out, the OPC gave me a fair price at the time, they have come down in price to about 230 for the fronts since then, they told me. Chris

Indeed Bridgetsones (Scurried away to look up latest N ratings) ... Yes the Bridgestone Potenza S001 (N0) are now also listed for Boxster and Cayman but still no Michelin offerings. Interestingly still only Pirelli for the 20" 991 offerings.

Nick, Thanks for confirmation, did you find anyone supplying them? My OPC service manager looked up N rated tyres on the Porsche system and only Pirelli listed as of last Friday. I have asked Michelin what they have been doing for the last two years and what is their target date for N rating, sounds like there are exclusive commercial arrangements....see if I get a useful answer.

In November 2012, lancerlot (997 Register) asked Mike of Michelin on their forum re PSS tyres "I've now heard elsewhere, it will at least summer 2013 before they will be homologated for Porsche and even then only in 991 sizes. Is this something you can confirm or otherwise? Do you know what the problem is?" MichelinMike replied "We are currently working with Porsche on their latest models with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport and not on the Porsche 911 type 997 models. Therefore we will continue with our current technical approvals on the Porsche 911 type 997 models for the foreseeable future - that is the N specification Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's, and the N specification Michelin Pilot Sport Cup+ tyres for certain applications. We do not expect to have a Porsche approved Pilot Super Sport fitment for the 911 type 997 models until at least 2014." Earlier this week I asked MichelinMike "How is it possible that there is still no Michelin 20" tyre with N rating? There must be a commercial exclusivity working here against consumer interests as it is very difficult to believe that two large companies with a long track record of cooperation need two years and counting to homologate tyres. Can you please advise whether there is a currently agreed target release date." To which the reply was: Latest news is that we continue to work with Porsche to achieve homologation for PSS for the next (my underline) version of the 991. Once, and only if this has been gained, will there will be a process of "back-homologation" for earlier models. Timescales suggest 2015. I will post here if I receive any further updates. I've gone back and asked about the 981 series, but it looks as though we are all good at copy/pasting the party line, does anyone know what is actually going on with Porsche and Michelin?

ORIGINAL: ralphmusic Mine came with Pirelli tyres, have any cars arrived with Michelins or Bridgestone?
I took delivery of my new Cayman on 6 January 2014 and it came with Bridgestones

Thanks and good to hear that potentially there is a choice for replacements. I guess you had yellow again to help Lancs be sunny!

So no 20" Michelins for 981s per Michelin Mike.. Q. Thanks but I have a 981 Cayman S, are there no efforts for homologating PSS for this vehicle type? A. The focus and priority remains the facelifted 991 . Only once this is achieved will homologation for other Porsche models be looked at. Not sure what a face lifted 991 is but perhaps Pirelli have a special commercial deal with Porsche?

Not only 20" Michelins Ralph. According to Nick's list there are no approved Michelin summer tyres for 981 Caymans (all MY2013). I really don't understand why we have to wait until the 991 facelift before a Michelin offering.....what have they been working on since the intro of the 991? Interesting to see that Goodyear Eagle F1 A2s have crept onto the list. Anyone had experience with them on their Porsche? Jeff

You can get 20" Michelin PSS from the US at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?tireIndex=2&autoMake=Porsche&autoYear=2014&autoModel=Cayman+S&autoModClar=&frontWidth=235%2F&frontRatio=35&frontDiameter=20&frontSortCode=59853&rearWidth=265%2F&rearRatio=35&rearDiameter=20&rearSortCode=59950&tab=All It lists two OE (Pirelli and Bridgestone with N rating) and one Best Seller (Michelin) - I haven't seen anything to convince me that there is not a commercial issue here.

And in the UK? see http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/michelin-pilot-super-sport?from…t-03851-918970-85287&selectedDimension=235%2F35%20R20%2088ZR(Y), and http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/michelin-pilot-super-sport?from…t-03851-006732-85272&selectedDimension=265%2F35%20R20%2095ZR(Y) First page of each says "Developed with Porsche, BMW M and Ferrari" - go figure!

You could well be right in assuming that some commercial issue is involved Ralph but, unless I've missed it, I'm not aware that Pirelli have capitalised on it in their advertising. I recall speaking with a Michelin rep about eighteen months ago who said that they were working actively with Porsche to get approval for the (recently introduced) PSS tyre, so I'm not sure what's happened since then. As I mentioned previously there are no approved Michelin summer tyres for 981 Caymans (even PS2 aren't listed), so Michelin certainly appear to be out of favour. Jeff
