Cayman 718 GTS - PCM google earth not working.?

Afternoon all,

Forgive me if this has been raised before, as I believe I have seen something similar that was back in early 2021..?

I recently collected my 718 Cayman GTS 2.5 from a reputable OPC - super car, but there seems to be an issue with the PCM navigation google earth layering option, which I found out when I returned home. Basically, it doesn't work. You select the layering option from the map screen and then the system informs me that its loading Google earth, but then nothing happens. It just sits there with a revolving circle, "Loading Google earth"

I've purchased the relevant connected services app and also paired to my car. All the associated services are confirmed loaded, and they all work apart from Google earth. I thought, as a last ditch attempt before I book the car in, if there was anything I could have possibly missed or anything I could do to rectify it..

Many thanks..

My GTS 4.0 is about 15 months old and the tracker monitoring on my car hasn't been operating for at least half of that time. I've had a failed remote reset, a failed 24 hours 'deep reset' at the supplying dealers and I'm going to a different OPC for a second attempt at a deep reset in a week or so. Don't know how my insurance would work out if the car was stolen whilst Porsche fail to iron out the problem they have created...

Good luck with your issue.

I've had my GTS 4.0 for 11 months and have had ongoing issues since I got it. Same kind of thing. Apps not loading. Tracking not working. PCM won't stay logged in. With the new My Porsche app released a few weeks ago nothing in the app works which apparently is related. I've also got a full subscription for everything. I've had a dialog with Porsche Support for months with no joy

Good luck and I hope you get sorted.

Unfortunately if having an active tracker is part of your policy then the insurance company could quite rightly refuse to pay out if it's not working and the car is stolen.

I've been incredibly lucky with my early 2020 GT4 as the tracker seems to have been active just fine since I got it, but OliR's late 2020 GT4 has had no end of issues that I still don't think are fully resolved.

It's a very well known issue, all you can do is keep going back to your OPC and hope they sort it.

From past experience, I know Porsche tech can be a little fickle, the the Porsche Connect app is woeful..The likes of BMW, with their connected drive, make it so easy to use and its free..I really don't know why Porsche cant get this sorted.?

Indeed! Having coming from M cars to Porsche it's night and day in terms of the tech. Luckily I was warned and aware of this in advance. I've a friend who's owned numerous models (Boxster, Macan, Cayenne, 911 and now a Taycan). The tech has been flaky on most of them.

Good to know of a happy 718 Cayman 2.5t GTS owner. My Guards Red 2019 example was the best Cayman I have ever owned, and I've owned a few.

Your Google Earth loading problem is similar to a problem I experienced soon after handover. I contacted my OPC, Chester, and they sorted it for me. Like you, I had all the connect services purchased but I could not access the satellite map view which was important for me in living in the Highlands.

I would recommend you contact your OPC and get them to reset your sat nav protocols. That should sort the problem.

BTW, you have bought one of the best non-GT4 Caymans ever. Shh, it's also faster......

Many thanks Brian, that sounds exactly the same issue as mine..I'll give my local OPC a call and get it booked in.đź‘Ť

LOL.. Yes, its got torque for days..its a fab car, and mine is also guards red, love the colour. I think I get as much pleasure looking at it as well as driving it.!! It's not as nice sounding as GT4, but distinctive none the less...

Thanks again..

Hi Brian,

I forgot to ask. In your experience, was this a fix they can do while you wait.?

Kind Regards,

Ed

Ed,

The fix was done remotely. It involved re-setting the Porsche Connect protocols at their end. I then logged-on to my account online and confirmed my car's details and mine, then logged-out.

When I checked the car sat nav set-up afterwards, the Satellite Map view box was no longer greyed-out.

I ticked the box and the satellite map view came on stream.

During the course of my ownership the Google sat nav received automatic updates periodically. I'm not sure for how long this feature continues as I sold the car within 2 years. There may be a licence fee payable thereafter.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Brian..

Although it does sound slightly different to the issue I'm having. The Google earth layering option is available in the PCM Nav, but it just doesn't load. The odd thing is that the 2 OPC's I'm dealing with have never come across this issue before, which I find strange, as I believe there was a recall/update about a year ago..?

Kind Regards,

Ed

Ed,

OPC Chester said that there had been server issues affecting Google maps which may have caused the glitch. It's just one of those things that happen with third party servers.

I hope you get it resolved soon.

Brian

Thanks Paul, yeah, I did see that posting - I'm surprised that the OPC's I'm dealing with have never heard of the issue..? Once I've got it booked in, and hopefully fixed, I'll update with the findings. Hopefully it may help someone else in the future..

Thanks again,

Ed
