Cayman 981 launch night

I see on other threads that people mention that they are going to launch nights this week.

However my local OPC has told me it is on 15th March, sounds very late or is just take longer to reach up north.

So what dates do you have?

Hatfield and Silverstone are tomorrow Peter. ChrisH said that Guilford is on Wednesday. Most probably there are only a limited number of cars available which are shunted around the dealerships. I guess that the same cars are firstly passed around within a group - Reading, Lancaster, Sytner, etc - before heading off to the next group. I'm sure that it'll be worth the wait for you. Jeff

Guildford is the 6th though I doubt i'll make it. Tonbridge I think is this week coming which would of been more convenient for me but i haven't had an invite.

Don't mind the wait as I agree it will be worth it. Just thought odd to be so spread out however if same people from Porsche and cars are moving round it makes sense.

I heard that there was a Dutch launch last week, quite downbeat compared with the 911 event. The first cars are being delivered to Dutch customers this week so will get to hear what they are like first hand. So we seem to be at least a week behind over here. I'm sure it will be worth the wait though for those few of us who are Cayman fans[:D]

Someone posted this on PH today Chris: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=1257546&mid=0&nmt=New+Cayman+S+test+drive A very low key launch in Holland it seems. Jeff

Jeff, Dam, you've blown my source.[;)] I see on Planet 9 there is another Dutch man taking delivery of his 2.7. First time I've seen one in that black, it reinforces our joint opinion that lighter colours seem to look best, also the standard 18 inch wheels look rather puny. Chris

Alas it's no use me offering you an in to West London on the 6th [:(]

Sheffield is also on the 6th, cars sales start from 16th so they should have demo cars for then. Leicester on the 5th. This week is potentially quite busy for Cayman fans as some will have been asked to loan their cars for the launch at the OPC's then launch night and Saturday Center Gravity.[:D]

It's OPC Chester launch night this evening. They expecting 300+ guest. Should be interesting. Should be good seeing my car on display next to the new cayman.

Your car will look pretty cool alongside it[:)] Whilst the 981 has a new modern look and is flawless from every angle, the compact shape of the 987, with it's simpler lines, does still have an endearing look. My cousin came along with me to view the Cayman. The only Porsche's he has been up close to have been mine, so not many. He preferred the Cayman S Sport that was on display. He liked the new Cayman but I think he was more drawn to the 991 as GT car and the 987 as, well, erm, not a GT car. The 981 was somewhere in the middle. Although, i'm sure it'll drive just like a 987C but better, and owners will get the best of both worlds.

We had a great night at the launch at OPC Chester. Car looked great on display in the work shop & new Cayman looks nice.

In case you haven't seen this vid over in the Cayenne register The driver looks a bit tight in there... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrKbcb1PSgE&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I don't think it's any fault of the car and his chunky jacket doesn't help the appearance, personally I find my Gen1 seat snug enough not to wear a jacket when driving but everything is the correct distance away. Also, the 991 has a similar amount of space. I did think that it demonstrated the Cayman quite well although his reference to 911 where he said the 911 can do some things the Cayman can't? Well the Cayman can do likewise in that it can do things better than the 911. It depends on how and what you want the car to do and that is one of the bases of how we choose.

Good to see that it was a manual transmission rather than the ubiquitous PDK 'box. Despite admitting to being a fan of the 911 (I too was puzzled by his comments), he did admit that the Cayman was really great to drive and that he'd like to drive it home. Jeff

I just got in the mail from my OPC a reprint of the Autocar road test of rthe 981 Cayman where they gave it 5 out of 5 stars and described it as "the best-value driver's car on sale today". I don't think the 991 got 5 stars in any tests, so it must be the extra power, 2 extra seats and that 911 badge that makes "it can do somethings better" [;)]

My copy of the Autocar test arrived this morning too Chris. Timed, presumably, to coincide with sales commencing today. I'm looking forward to seeing how well the car sells in the next 9 months since the market has been starved of new Caymans for more than a year. Jeff
