Todays Autocar basically confirms once again that Boxster/Cayman are one and the same just different badges and pricing ;-)

SO MAYBE WE NEED ONLY ONE FORUM AFTER ALL :ROFLMAO:

But I'll eat my right arm if the people at Porsche haven't also fettled the springs, dampers, bushes and steering to make the latest Boxster crisper, cleaner and generally meaner than it ever was before

Any truth in this? I thought it was engine only.

Great final paragraph. Should upset a few SLK/TT/Z4 owners!

Never the less, it seems that the Z4's power-unit is much better tuned than that of the Boxter's...
And this is because Porsche is providing so many models with power-units enamating from only 2 base units....

Don't you mean "gives a higher power output"? The article says to me that the Porsche is the engine that is better tuned.
Manufacturers standard engines are set to the level that they estimate to provide the best compromise for all conditions. Tuning means that you exploit attributes in one direction, usually at the expense of another.
295 bhp is enough for an old racer like me and it's 70 bhp more than the 2.7 Carrera.

Hey Alex
I just read the specs:
Z4 has an 3246 cc power unit with an output of 338 bhp
987 has an 3387 cc power unit with an output of 295 bhp
Or even better look at the SPECIFIC OUTPUT:
Z4: 103 bhp/lt whereas 987: 87 bhp/lt
As a rule of thumb, a power unit is a performance one when it produces close to 100 bhp/lt.
The whole vehicle performance is best indicated by the power to weight ratio and here:
Z4 is 228 bhp/tn whereas 987 is only 191 bhp/tn
Again, rule of thumb for performance cars that is at least 200 bhp/tn.
In my opinion and on specs the Z4 seems superior to the Boxster.

The power developed is much higher up the rev range of the engine, and so is the torque. This is also the case with the Honda S2000. You can squeeze more hp out of same litre engines by either making them rev harder or strap on a turbo. In the former. you loose bottom end torque. What makes Porsches a delight to drive is the good flexible engine with good low down torque and also high end power.

Ah... but it's not a Porsche. It's a BMW [:'(].
I have a friend who has a Z4. He doesn't say much. But, I can tell how he admires my S. [;)]
