Cayman Gen 2 Gear Cable Failure

Hi Everyone. I have a Gen 2 Cayman which has literally just turned 3 years old and has 28K miles on it. The gear cable broke on friday, luckily in first gear and I nursed it home. Has anyone had any similar issues? Out of warranty but pretty angry about something like this going wrong at this stage. Found examples on plant 9 of issues in the US and Canada.

Thanks Keith

Sorry to hear about that Keith but, as you say, not unknown in Cayman/Boxster circles. Still, a fairly rare occurence but annoying when it happens - especially on a relatively low-mileage car like yours. I note that you don't have a Porsche extended warranty, so it means either finding a reliable local Indy or handing it over to an OPC if you don't fancy doing the job yourself. Probably no more than a couple of hours to fix, plus parts. Hope you get it sorted soon. Jeff Edit: Just a thought but are you certain that it's actually a broken cable and not a cable end that's broken or slipped out of engagement?

Hi Keith sorry to hear of this, if you want to check out the front end connections there is a website ( Search for Billswebspace.com ) with a well photographed sequence for removing the console on the 987 Boxster and showing the installation of a short shift kit, it will show you just what can come adrift at the front end. Also, if you have the PET for the Cayman you can check the blow ups to see how things are, PM me and I can send the Gen 1 unfortunately the PET for the Gen 2 is too large for my server but there is no difference on the diagram.

Assuming the car has full Porsche service hsitory, it might be worth asking Porsche to contribute something ex gratia to the repair.

Had the cable go on my 2006 Cayman last November, actually when my son was driving it. Car had to be recovered to my local OPC thankfully I had appropriate AA cover. I was a bit concerned when the AA man started poking around the centre console hoping to remove it and was able to ring the OPC who advised him to leave well alone as it was not a roadside job. Labour to dismantle and replace the two cables was £297 plus vat. Cost of cable was £189.96 plus vat. OPC service manager told me it was not unknown for the cables to go on 911s, Boxters and Caymans but they don't see many.
