Cayman GT4 vs Boxster Spyder?

Hi all,

I'm considering trading my 997 GTS 2 PDK for either a GT4 or a 981 Spyder. I love the 997 but fancy a change, I know both are great cars and I 'hope' that despite being at premiums the rarity of either model will help keep the overall cost of ownership better or no worse than other Boxsters, Caymans or non-GT 911s.

There seem to be a lot of GT4s up on OPCs at the moment, I'm guessing to make way for new GT3s maybe? I appreciate the driving trade-offs between the GT4 and the Spyder, would be interested what people on the forum think about relative long term values between the 2 cars? I don't expect to make money, rather avoid too much depreciation and have a lot of fun in the meantime

Thoughts appreciated!
 
I think both offer safer propositions than other Caymans/Boxsters; short term FT 4 is prob safer but a new model is on its way.....
 
If you want a car for the ultimate performance on track-days, then I suppose the Cayman GT4 is the one.

I have a Spyder and love the looks and the ability to drop the roof. And any 'loss' of performance compared to a GT4 is irrelevant for me, as I doubt that I have the driving skills to notice the differences.

As a Spyder owner, I am one very happy man
 
It's so dull to talk values, what car do you want and why, forget values none are going to drop as much as any other new car !

You can also forget spy shots of cars as these are just mules testing engines in old car bodies and might never turn up.

Porsche have a lot of cars due out atm, GT3, GT2, some other new 911 thing of which is to be confirmed this month.

I am coupe man though and through, the cars just drive better, and you use them more. Look at Spyder miles and most do sub 1k a year lol very few even do 3k a year.
then this is the next issue miles kills car value esp on cars with overs !!! , so if you plan to do 1k a year then the price of the car will not move much, if you want to use the car the price will drop, simples, most owners seem scared to death to use the cars, and the value can be a 15k gap.

You say fun, well My R is more fun than my GT4 and I have driven a 981 Spyder and my 987.2 Spyder is more fun that that also.
So if it's fun you are after buy the older cars, safer values as well if you DO care about value, and the get in price is £40k less so you could buy A 1299S Ducatti and still have £20k in your pocket to run them !

when you think you can buy a Golf Clubsport S, Lotus Elise and a new 1299 Ducatti Sport for the price of a 981 Spyder, is that really the route you want to go ?

I would say keep the 997 GTS if it were a manual ! it has a better engine than any of the cars we are talking about and better steering than any new car.
So I can see the need for a change as PDK is life sucking dull :p

So as you need advice on how to spend £90k :)

Golf Clubsport S £38k came 2nd in evo car of the year, and is a hoot
Lotus Elise 220 £32k more fun than any Porker
1299 panigale S Ducati £18k, well it just looks amazing and if you don't ride you can look at it.
Total cost £88k

or you can buy a 981 Spyder which was list price £65k fully loaded for £88k !

People harp on about what else can you buy for the same money and the GT4 and 981 Spyder is mega value lol (at list they were ok I guess but still not peaunuts), well not up vs the 3 items I just listed imho of course.

IF you really want to use a car spend £18k on a 2nd hand MX5 and £4k on a BBR 200+ kit and save £66k and have as much fun as any one else on todays roads. (and the roof works)

For me there is no more fun than topless motoring any day its dry [8D]

Is that actually a 718 cayman? Looks more like a 981 to me but pics not displaying v well on my phone.

Its a test mule running the new oily bits in the bodywork isn't 718
 
All I can say is I went from 997 GTS 2wd manual to the 981 Spyder and for me it was a good decision from a driving perspective. Values wise they both seem to be increasing with the edge to the 997 but really not much in it to worry about. What i can say is the Spyder attracts more positive attention than any car I have ever owned. My mother in law strokes it ! I still would have another GTS in a heartbeat but the Spyder is the one that hooks at an emotional level.
I never considered the GT4 because the Spyder roof gives two cars in one, is rarer which I like and evidently sounds better but Im road use only these days so Im sure the case for a GT4 comes in depending on your priorities.
