Having seen snippets about the new Cayman GTS, does anyone know if this is in lieu of a new Cayman R, or is there to be another model announced in a few months with +15 bhp +£3k -25kg -some kit that mainly gets re-applied for another +£2k?

Did that make sense?
 
Paul, it sounds as though the GTS will be a high-spec Cayman S with a mild power hike and bespoke front and rear PUs. Whether or not an R will follow at some stage is open to question but 981 production is still in its infancy, so there's still time and scope for other developments dependent upon marketing needs. Agree the GTS and the new name for the 'Sport Edition'. The 981 platform is in it's infancy and the R version of the 987 gen II was the 987 swansong ..... so the new R is a long way away.

No one knows for sure but as the price difference, power difference, wheel difference, PU difference back and front, PSE & PASM standard all add up to similar if not even greater changes than the Cayman R had over a stock "S" and as their previously wasn't any 987 GTS versions my money would say this is it for the 981 family [&o] http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/beijing-motor-show/new-porsche-boxster-gts-spied-undisguised

Carbon composite tailgate with plastic windows, 3.8 engine, PCCB brakes, roll cage with integral racing harness, less sound insulation, and option of 6 speed manual or 991 GT3 PDK. Also track orientated tyres as standard. Oh. and a factory supported GB Cayman national race series. If only the motorsport division had more sway in the marketing strategy. Brian
Now you're talking TrackfanR, but I think you'll have to build that one yourself. I might change my 'R' this year, but so far my local Porsche Centre has failed to come up with a new manual Cayman of any type for me to try out...
 
Brian, When the 981 Cayman was released, Andreas Preuninger, chief engineer of the new 911 GT3 said Porsche is analyzing the prospects of a more hardcore version of the Cayman and he said testing for a track-focused variant has already been done but a final decision has not been taken yet. I can't see the GTS fulfilling this description so we'll have to wait for some time for such a car to materialise, if it does at all. Paul, I don't know where you're located but there are a few 981 manual Cayman demonstrators around. Your local PC may be able to borrow one from another dealership. Jeff

Hi Paul Assuming you're considering a switch to a 981 Cayman S or GTS as there'll be nothing like a 981 R this year, would be interesting to hear your thoughts for doing so. Not that it would be blasphemous to consider it of course, just wanted to understand what changes you are looking for. Also, would you be considering the X73 Sports Chassis option? Thanks
 
Reasons for changing? 1. I do tend to after 2-3 years in general. (I think I may be addicted to the smell of new cars!). I had a Cayman S in '06 and did enjoy it, though my current 'R' is undoubtably more special, and makes me feel like I really treated myself when I bought it. And I do love it. 2. For the first time ever I chose one of the 3-year contracts, so I either pay the other half of the purchase price or hand it back later in the year if I don't use it as the deposit on my next car. 3. Though I regret that the new car is bigger and detest electric handbrakes, I do think that the styling is an unqualified success. 4. I'm not a track day or competition addict, and at 60 it's unlikely I'll become one. I just like driving taught, well-built sports cars, shall we say 'briskly'. I probably would go for the sports chassis option, sports exhaust, seats etc (anything that says sports really, and makes a sports car sportier - a fool and his money are easily parted with). I may have to trawl around one or two other dealers to try a manual in the next 4 months so I can spec and order in good time. Or maybe Nottingham PC will come up with the goods eventually. I should have had a loan 981 from there whilst my 'R' was being serviced last November, but it was withdrawn for reasons unstated the evening before my service was due… I've heard nothing from them since - apart from info on the Macan! Decisions decisions...
 
All very logical [:)] If you do end up going from R to X73 981 I'd be keen to hear your thoughts.
