cayman info.

Thinking of changeing my 2003 boxster S.for a 2007 caymanS.does the cayman suffer I M S.bearing problems or any other engine faults.and how much road tax per year.JIMBOB.

ORIGINAL: Contraband Hi... The 3.4S is in band L, so it is now £475 per year.
Hi Just had a look at my Cayman 3.4R (2011) tax Disc and mine is only £270 (218 CO2 emission (g/km)), but it goes up to £280 this year. What is the CO2 emission (g/km) for a Cayman 3.4S? Just seem alot for a older car to mine. Alun

Hi I have a Cayman S October 2006, tax is £475.00 based on the Co2. I understand the Gen 2 tax is slightly less. Faults are IMS and RMS but IMS not as common as on the earlier Boxster. RMS nothing to worry about. Some scary stories of bore scoring. Inner track rod ends and steering racks are also often raised as issues. None of this stopped me buying one. If you have a Porsche warranty most is covered anyway. Just make sure you source a good one, buy it an enjoy. You only live once. Trevor

If you get one of the first year's Cayman S's then it is around £260 but that is due to it being before the new rates of tax were applied. The Gen 2 engines which have Direct Fuel Injection ( DFI ) came out in '09 and are more economical with lower tax but prices on those are still quite high. As said above concerning the Gen 1 3.4 S the RMS can give problems but they are not as bad as made out by some, it is the last version with IMS and is the best version before they designed it out. Regarding the bore scoring, since the oil jets which feed the lower bore jets open at a set pressure the revs need to be high enough to raise the oil pressure above that level and so give oil flow all around the engine. Try to only put loads on when above 2K revs.[;)]

Just had my 987 cayman s convertible [:D] back from a total engine and gearbox rebuild all done under warranty [:)] Bore scoring the culprit and a bill north of £10k if I didn't have warranty Luckily I did Suggest whatever you choose get Peter Morgan or similar check it out first

Gen2 Cayman S has no IMS since the timing chain runs directly off the crank to the camshafts with various items to give variable valve timing etc, DFI as said earlier improves the economy and greatly reduces the road tax from the Gen1. Gen 2's in the OPC Porsche approved are £30K+ and up into the £40K range.

Interesting to note that the annual tax rate for a manual and a PDK 987.2 Cayman S is £280, but the equivalent respective rates for a 981 Cayman S are £280 and £260. Also, the first year rate for a manual 981 Cayman S is £620 whereas that for the PDK car is £475. Sadly, long term it looks like another nail in the coffin for manual transmissions as auto 'boxes gain more gears to "massage" the emission figures. Jeff
