Cayman not getting use it deserves

Steve,

Clearly the best thing to do is use the car regularly, but if you can't then I'm not sure that just letting the car sit at idle for an extended period is the best alternative. As the handbook says, it's best to start the car and then drive away ASAP to get the engine up to temperature quickly to minimise wear on the moving parts.

Of course, it's not just the engine but all the other parts which need to be exercised too - transmission, wheel bearings, etc. and in order to get the engine oil up to temperature really you need to give the car a decent run of 10 miles or more.

I'm not sure if that helps your situation but I think that somehow you just need to find a way to get out and drive your Cayman on a regular basis.

Hi guys
Would like your opinions
My 2006 Cayman s (approx 47k miles) is not currently getting the use it deserves
Due to work/family commitments I have not been out in the car for approx 3 weeks
We read so much on the forums etc about keeping the engine in regular use, getting up to higher revs occasionally & getting the oil moving around the engine
My question is: If I can't get out for a run for a couple of weeks or so should I be starting the engine & letting it at least get up to temperature?
By answering my own question the drivers handbook says to drive straight away & not let the engine warm up on tickover. Therefore I should just not touch the car until I'm ready for a run & then take it out !!!
Then I think the longer I leave it without driving it may cause more harm than good
Maybe just having a paranoid moment but your advice would be very helpful
Sorry if I've contradicted myself

cheers Steve

Hi Jeff

Cheers for that

Sounds like I need to make more of an effort to get out in the car more- sometimes just a bit difficult re time

Im aware that everything needs to be moving & the fluids flowing so perhaps it's just me not managing my time very well

I sold my other pride and joy (944 s2) partly because of lack of use & that's definitely not going to happen with the cayman

thanks again for your input

On a different note:

(I noticed the 997 register were advertising 997 club window stickers, do you know if there is one for the Cayman register ? )

Cheers Jeff, thanks

I think the reasoning behind starting and driving straight away is more about getting the catalytic converters up to temperature as quickly as possible, which won't happen if you just leave it idling.

In this world controlled by the Emissions Stasi I'm sure you're correct Richard. However, even pre-cat I've never been comfortable with just letting a car warm up at idle and have always preferred to get under way ASAP to get the engine and transmission and other components up to temperature quickly. It's never done any of my cars any harm.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your advise

Kevan has been in touch, many thanks

I cancelled an appointment last night and took the car out- Cayman singing along nicely in the beautiful south lakes countryside with a great autumn evening thrown in as well

what on earth was I thinking about leaving it so long before getting out, life really is so good

thanks again guys

steve

That's good news Steve - make the most of this good spell of weather and your fantastic scenery while you still can. If you have them, take the wife/partner/one of the kids/friend (??) along with you - any excuse..!

Jeff
