Cayman Production to Cease..!!

Well....temporarily at any rate.!

Speaking to one of the sales reps at a 991 launch before Christmas, he said that when the new Boxster is released in March, Cayman production will stop.

The new Cayman won't appear until the Frankfurt Show in September - at the earliest - so it might present a "sales opportunity" if you're thinking of selling in the coming months as the dealer stock becomes depleted.

Some production assembly is being switched from the Valmet company in Finland to the Austrian company Steyr, so this may account in part for the temporary cessation.

Hi I would double check that information with the salesman you spoke to as the Frankfurt Motor show is every 2 years & as the 991 Carrera was launched at the show in 2011 the next one is not till 2013 & not 2012 as you advise. Also as the next New Porsche due for release in 2013 is the new Baby SUV the Cajun I would think this model maybe the new Porsche launched at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show & not the Cayman as you advise. Thanks for your input Kevin. A possible launch at the Franfurt show was my (incorrect) assumption, not the rep's comment. The rep only confirmed what I'd heard from Garry Sorrell (OPC Cambridge) who was a guest speaker at our November club night, so I can only assume that Cayman production will cease temporarily with the introduction of the new Boxster. As to when the new Cayman will be introduced, there are plenty of other opportunities this year and next. Maybe it will be a low-key affair and not at a major show..!! Jeff
 
Spoke to OPC today who said Cayman production stops at the end of this month and new model is still slated for 2013. So in between times you can't order a new Cayman to your own spec unless it exists already. I can't believe the factory will leave this situation for a whole year before the new model starts production in which case it must be announced some time during the summer.

I was told Boxster & Boxster Spyder production stopped back in July last year yet OPC's still have plenty of unsold unregistered stocks of both models!! OPC DP said Boxster production stopped end Dec. I'm sure there are enough Boxsters and Caymans "in the system" for this situation to satisfy demand, but for how long. My guess is that production of new Cayman will start after this summer 's factory break.

Garry Sorrell (OPC Cambridge) was at our post-Christmas lunch today and reiterated that Boxster and Cayman production had now ceased and that the new Cayman was due for release October/November (at the LA Auto Show perhaps...?). That could well mean that we won't see it here in our showrooms until January/February next year. Jeff
 
I suspect there will be a launch here in Dec this year. As you said there is no Frankfurt show next year then LA is the only other show in the Autumn. I still say the details will be revealed in the press during the summer and production will start post summer break. So it looks like there will be no production of Cayman for most of the year. Perhaps that's a good thing for us owners.
 
You could well be right Chris. Good news for residuals and, as I said in my original post, good news also if you're considering selling. Jeff
 
Jeff, getting the HPFP changed tomorrow, will let you know how it goes and any change to the Cayman production story.

With the new Boxster announcement today and delveries as from 28 April, I wonder if that means the new Cayman will be announced any earlier than the dealers are saying? Still reckon announcement in June and production in the autumn. I think Boxster looks great and with 3.4 S, not 3.2 as press said. Just dissppointed no 7- speed manual offered.
 
I'd have thought that we would have seen some "near production-ready" spy shots of the Cayman by now if they're gearing up for production in September after the August shut-down, but you never know. I wonder if they're going to use the scalloped Boxster door on the Cayman or if they'll use the 991 door in the same way as they use the 997 door on the current model? In the shots that I've seen to date, the door is flat and the intake panel is effectively carry-over 987. The 7-speed (overdrive) manual box is based upon the PDK box - probably more expensive to produce and heavier than the current box - and 6-speeds are more than enough for me..!! Anyway, the 911 and Boxster/Cayman boxes are completely different. Jeff
 
There's plenty of time yet to spot test mules at the ring before a production start of September. As its based on Boxster and that is starting production soon there is too much of a gap for there to be no Cayman production at all this year, IMO. I would have preferred 7 speed for the more relaxed cruising and better fuel consumption, now the only way to get that is PDK for 2k extra. And I still find PDK confusing and complicated, having driven the 991.
 
Let's wait and see Chris. Whatever happens, it'll be a while before we see new Caymans on our roads. Perhaps we'll be getting some "special editions" in an attempt to shift existing stock? My Cayman's not a daily ride, so refinement and fuel consumption are not really big issues for me - despite the fact that my expertise is in vehicle refinement and so I'm rather fussy!! - and I still rather enjoy shifting the gears myself. I've not had much experience with the PDK box but, like you, wasn't totally convinced on the one outing I had when I drove a PDK Cayman R at the Silverstone Centre. The car was equipped with the paddles (which were OK) but I couldn't get along with the console lever which seemed counter-intuitive to me: push forward to change up and pull back to change down. Surely it should be the other way round as when accelerating, momentum pulls your body backwards into the seat and you want to grab the lever and pull it back, not push it forward; the converse applies when you're braking. Jeff
 
As I said in an earlier post Porsche are stopping production of the Cayman at the end of this month. In an effort to sell off cars in the system there are some special offers at the moment,but that's it, no more Gen II Caymans so I give it 6 months before the new one is out. I agree with you about PDK, you have to learn how to try to control it. Without that readout I would never know which gear I'm in and then I have to think what gear do I want to be in. Any small overtake maneouver can see it go from 7th to 2nd and the revs go sky high and then it wont change up at all because Im in sport, I hate that!
