Well Glyn, your best bet is to go to the nearest OPC, depending on which part of Leicestershire you are in and take a test drive in whatever they have that you like the look of, it will be well prepared with a 2 year Porsche warranty. Since you want the extras rather than outright performance go for the S as if you get an R with all of the toys the only advantage will be the lower ride height and the 10bhp extra. OPC Leicester have a good reputation.
 
Been away from Porsche for 2 years (XF 4.2) but now looking for a new toy, Looking at Carrera 2 but very tempted with a cayman, Only want a gen 2 with PDK but what is the difference between the S and the R.
I want the touch screen sat nav, heated seats, sport designs, leather, bi zenon, bluetooth, cruise, parking aid etc etc - indeed i want all the toys, looking to spend around 50K.
I know about the 10BHP difference which is negligent as i dont drive flat out all the time and can live without the .1 of a second difference 0 - 60.
Had Boxters for 10 years before the XF but an old bloke in a rag top - with it down looks a P**t hence the coupe route.
I figure if i wait until January i will get a better deal as the psychological difference with a car being a "Year older" will force dealers to drop the price and traditionally they cant sell a paperclip in January.
So i want the newest car for the cheapest price and obviously a great deal, given the fact i love the Carrera should i add a few K and get a gen 2 carrera PDK or get a newer Cayman and if Cayman - R or S
I scoured so many adverts that is all becoming a blurr - I want it all.

there are plenty of old blokes on here quite happy with ragtops down[:D] i wouldnt care what other people think if I was you-the boxster s is fab!-just spent 10 sublime days in the alps with the roof down the whole time-its about enjoyment not what other people think! however if you want to go the cayman route-and i have-they are also great fun-but you wont get an "R"for 50k-there are 3 at hatfield opc this week starting at £60K up to nearly £65k an "s" with all the toys you so rightly want(mine has all these!) will also be nearer 60k than 50-and you can get a pretty good carrera gen 2 for that amount nearly new at opc-so best take your loot to your opc and give them all a try!! have fun choosing
 
On paper there isnt much in the S Gen II and the R but in reality when you drive them, there is. FWIW I think the R will do better residually as well and although the consensus was it wasn't the hardcore GT3RS-lite that everyone was hoping for, it is still a brilliant drive.
 
Hi, I just part exed my year old Red Cayman S with only 3,700 miles and all the toys you have mentioned plus some ie sport chrono for the extra buzz of the launch control and faster pace in sport and sport plus and paddle steering wheel (a must with pdk), its at Porsche Sutton Coldfield and mint. Have a word with Ben Plows, for comparing models they have a used lime green Cayman R as well. I've moved back into a Cayenne (the daddy of them all a Turbo S 550bhp) my CS had a very easy life tucked up in the garage over winter and stayed there in the spring and early summer while I recovered from an operation. It doesn't have a chip or mark on it and has about 3 layers of top zymol polish between the paint and the environment. Cheers Paul
 
I am very pleased with mine [;)] Was out at Curborough in the 964 RS N-GT today and at Cadwell Park in the rain a couple of weeks ago in the Cayman R .... They are both utterly fantastic, but the R can also be used every day. I know the GT3's can also, but the R is just such a convenient package with all the stowage space --- and a little bit nearer mid engine. And, when I'm not trying I get 25 mpg !

So you let what others think an old bloke in a rag top looks like ruin your personal pleasure!!   I have had rag tops since passing my test in 1968 and am on my 6th Boxster since 1997 and this one doesn't even have a rag top and I feel like a lotto winner with each fun filled topless drive.  What others think I couldn't give a flying * * * * [8D]

Like Daro I've been driving sports cars since I was about 20, so more than 40 years. Plenty were rag tops, couldn't give a fishes f**t what others think in their rep-mobiles! It doesn't matter what you do, drive or whatever there's always someone who thinks it not right, their problem unless you make it yours.[8|]
 
Thanks to all of you for your comments, I keep scouring Pistonheads and auto trader and at this time there are so many cars to choose from, for the right car an extra few K is not a deal breaker and by being patent and waiting for the new year i believe dealers will discount their prices to reflect the "Year older" consideration. Having had Boxsters for 10 years i was well aware of the limited cover the warranty provides - there seems to be so many exclusions with Porsche warranty however Leicester OPC has stated their warranty has now changed and now they are in line with other manufactures - anyone know if this is true? An example is wheel bearings - Porsche wheel bearings are made of bon bons and they were not covered by warranty unlike just about every other manufacturer, If you fit non Porsche windscreen wipers (and buy Bosch - which is the OEM supplier anyway) they will say its not original and refuse warranty claims - has this all changed Glyn
 
The Porsche Warranty is now said to be "Bumper to Bumper" but having said that I'm always dubious as to what effect wear & tear have on acceptance of claims, You do have to make sure you have a Porsche branded battery etc or it will void warranty but if you read through what is covered it is far more comprehensive than the old warranty. Leicester are helpful and I've been told that if you have a quote for a job with an independent they will give a comparable price.
 
Leicester PC are brilliant, have been looking after my turbo for 2 years, wouldnt move anywhere esle. Martyn Ray is service is a top guy, and theyre honest too :)
 
Think as most of the guys say its each to their own! People will either agree or disagree with your choices but end of the day its not them driving it. I absolutely love my Cayman R as its the closest vehicle with four wheels to give me the same thrill as my two wheel vehicles. It gets its critics but so do cars double the price but like a tailored suit its fits me perfectly and ticks my boxes and I just love the driving experience I get from it. One of my pals has a boxster spyder and I can't deny that it looks stunning with the roof down and I like the drive but for me it is just missing something which I can't quite put my finger on so I didnt buy one, end of? On a side note he is 45 years young and think he looks cooler than a cool thing on a cool day and drives with the smile of a cheshire cat and isnt that what matters not what people looking at him think? So for me its a Cayman R any day but sure the differences are marginal? Looking at the extra's and comfort options such as heated seats the R is not for you and you will not be disappointed with the S. What would we sit in the pub and debate over a pint anyway if we all liked the same things [:D]
 
I had a 24 hour test drive in an R...way back in the Spring. I wrote up an article for the Cayman column in Porsche Post which went out in June or July (I think). Two major differences between the S and the R..not already mentioned 1 . The R has a tuned suspension package and cannot have the PASM option. 2. The R also has a locked diff (Porsches description - not mine)... seems to behave like a LSD. Whilst I would still need to live with my S, the traction and handling of the R was brilliant!
