Cayman radiator fan

Well Spring looks like it may have sprung this week .... and to coincide the radiator fan (or fans) on my Gen 1 Cayman decided to start playing up.

Now I may be paranoid but it hasnt been that warm this week, but once the engine is warmed up the radiator fans are staying on for long periods, then shutting down and then coming back on etc.... I have checked the coolant level and all is OK and the temp gauge isnt getting any hotter, so I am thinking this may be a temp sensor problem?

Has anyone else had any similar issue before I book into OPC Tonbridge?

Thanks.

.......Not sure if it helps but the fan on mine dosnt cut in unless its been sitting/stationary in traffic for quite some time...say 10-15mins and thats combined with it being a hot summers day only then do I hear the fan kick in....good luck and hope its not too much of an issue.

Hmmm .... my fan is coming on when in motion - will actually cut back out when stopped and then come back on again a while later ... all rather not normal i fear. Appointment with OPC required before the summer really comes along!

I had this....there are 2 fans at the front, one of mine was seized and caused the other one to cut in for no reason,,(maybe the electronics can sense when one fan is US?)...the indy Porsche specialist I use spotted it during service, freed off the seized fan, and all is now well....my OPC previously had claimed nothing wrong during warranty period!

Alan, thanks for the post - this may now make some sense as I have let the engine warm nicely and the problem only seems to be the near-side fan ONLY. I will get the OPC to check this as possible problem and solution before they hit me with too high a bill for work. Many thanks, [;)] Trev.

I have had this problem on both of my two front rad fans. One fails and the other needs to work overtime to maintain the cooling. OPC Centre said I needed a new fan (surprise!) however I checked it out with my local indie specialist and they took it out, freed it up and a bit of WD40 later was working fine again. They tend to to stick if grit and general muck gets into them and on cars that are not garaged and exposed to the elements 24/7 seems to happen more commonly. Saved a packet not going to the OPC and having them simply replaced! Long live the indie specialists and their 'lets try and fix it first' philosophy! Hope this helps. Cheers.

Sarah Without wishing to fall foul of any restrictions on advertising on the forum, do you happen to recall which indie this was? David

Sure, its a North West London Porsche Specialist called 911SBD....Ive found them very good. Look them up on the net. (Note - No advertising intended in any way from this post!) [;)]

So.... one new near-side fan and one rather dented wallet. Oh well, at least with the 10% discount my PCGB membership has paid for itself for another year! I did get a nice new Boxster to use with the top down over the last couple of days to enjoy the nice weather - still nice to be back in the Cayman though as the Boxster just feels a little too soft for my driving liking.
