Cayman S Gen 1 vs Gen 2 - Coming to PP soon...

Hi Everyone,

Porsche Exeter kindly lent me a Gen 2 Cayman S over the weekend for me to write a comparison piece with my Gen 1 car. Don't want to give the full story away now, but if there is only 25bhp difference between the two, they must be bloody big horses. Watch out for the story coming soon in Porsche Post.

Best wishes,
Richard.

I'm thinking of buying a new Gen 2 S manual but in the current climate not prepared to pay full list price. Any views on what sort of deal I should be targeting? I don't have a trade-in so won't get the trade-in over-allowance that seems to be offered at the moment but I would expect options thrown in the deal to an equivalent value.

Would love the Viper Green Sport they have at Bolton OPC but suspect if pushed my only concession might - despite current climate - be: [link=http://www.vertexauto.com/UserData/Images/Large/208316.jpg]http://www.vertexauto.com/UserData/Images/Large/208316.jpg[/link]

But the trade in I got was probably about £2000 above ( for my "old" new 2003 2.7 ) trade in value! As I said any "discount" from a PCM is good and they really had to chase me to make the deal! I think the PCM dealer had a quota to fill and apparently the £3000 sweetner from Porsche was to existing Porsche owners who bought a new Porsche before the end of March 2009.

Talking to Porsche Tonbridge at the weekend and their problem is now getting hold of new stock. On Saturday they had a new 911 Turbo and a Cayman S being collected having delivered two other cars during the week. They have an allocation for each model through to August and have nearly sold everything. They were allocated 7 Caymans and have sold 6 of that allocation and expect no trouble in selling the 7th. They even complained about not having enough 2nd hand stock as that is also selling. In terms of discounts I ordered in December and got about 7.5% off list and a good trade in value for the nearly 3 year old Cayman S. They actually took the trade in immediately and gave me the cash for 3 months, which given the number of miles I would have done during January and February suited me.

OPC Hatfield gave me the same story ....usually have upto 60 used cars to offer now down to just 4! However when I offered them a 10k dry mile minter the salesman quickly excused himself and disappeared into the very smoke screen he had tried spreading on me seconds before hand :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: With not many new car slots available and zero used stock to talk about how will all these OPC's survive? []

martin as i am soon to make a very similar decision with similar spec it would be interesting(!)to know what kind of a price to change you had with the opc.perhaps you could email me ??many thanks dylan

Gestation period to print seems to have been a long time but good article in PP. Well worth reading.

July PP suggests that OPCs are now going to "regularly" stock used Porsches up to 10 years old. That echos my sighting of a 996 40-year Anniversary and a 968 Club Sport at OPC Silverstone recently.

excellent article richard more food for thought as i take a protracted 2 day test tomorrow[:)]

Excellent article Richard. We are in a quandary though - looking to change our 06 S this year but as good as the new car is who could justify the ~25k cost of changing to a new one? I see a few demo cars are now appearing on the OPC network so maybe the gap will close and the G1 cars seem to holding their values well now & even seem to have risen since Christmas. We are looking at a 997 today as we have the occasional need for 2+2, but I suspect we'll still prefer the C.

linda and i are having the same"debate"!!alan having had the experience with cayman gen 2 it clearly is better in lots of ways but the handling characterisitics which make it so great are much the same so is it worth another 25-30k??especially in current climate.mmmmm.i had a 997 2S pdk for 2 days last month and that was awesome but i preferred the cayman (for me).however,i have a gen2 pdk for 2 days tomorrow followed by a experience afternoon in 2 weeks in a 9972S pdk so should be near decision time after that!![:D] then its just convincing linda that all those " home improvements" can wait a bit longer!![:)] say hi to julie atb dylan and linda

Hi all, I'm new around here, I've just put down a depo on a used Gen 2 "S" from Porsche Tonbridge, hope to collect this Thursday, I was impressed with the new engines mid range torque, over the Gen 1 that I drove a few weeks ago. Finger crossed A couple of teasers

I'm also changing to a "used" Cayman Gen 2 shortly. What spec. is yours - I see it has Xenons and Carrera II 19ins, that would be with Pirellis then? I found the ride better than 18ins on Michelin Sports.

Thanks for the feedback about the article - it's nice to know it gets read. Although I'd love a Gen 2 Cayman S, when I asked my OPC what the cost would be to swap my Gen 1 for their Gen 2 demonstrator (as featured in the story) they said it could be mine for a mere £14k. As their demonstrator is less than six months younger than my car, has a similar spec and has done the same mileage, that's an offer I'm going to have to refuse...

linda and i are having the same"debate"!!alan
Yes it is a problem! Looked at an 07 997, nice enough, but... we still prefer the C! So I'm afraid you'll disappointed/pleased <delete as approriate> to know we'll be staying in the Cayman fold for the foreseeable future. I think we'll look for G2 car prices to soften, Spoonie (always listen to you on 606 BTW), I saw that car on P used car site, looks like a good deal, not mad keen on those wheels though, hope you enjoy it. A&J.
