Cayman S: Oil Consumption and Blue Smoke

Hello. I have a Cayman S with 37,000 miles. I have had it for fourteen months, done 9000 miles and gone through 10 litres of Mobil 1 0-40W! There are no oil leaks on my path. I was told by Guildford OPC, twelve months ago, that if it is drinking 1 litre or less every 750 miles it is within tolerance.

I have recently noticed blue smoke on start up, which goes soon afterwards. Since seeing the blue smoke, along with the rate of oil consumption, I suspect I have a problem that needs attention.

Anyone else experienced something like this?
 
Sounds like a problem, also have gen 2 cayman s and used no oil for first 7000 miles on clock. If the car is within warranty i would make a fuss based on the cost alone of oil!
 
Hi I have had 3 Boxsters over the years and have never had to put any oil in between services. Does sound a bit extreme. Tracy
 
No sign of blue smoke starting up before driving to work or afterwards coming home. Just been out for dinner: no smoke going there or leaving, but we stopped off at the off licence en route and when I started it up, after the car had been switched off for 5 minutes I got a big plume of blue smoke!
 
I don't want to worry you unneccessarily but we have had a number of engines nipped (lightly seized) usually on the number 6 cylinder (but always 4, 5, or 6) because the engine runs hotter on that side. Indeed we suspect there may be a problem with that side of the engine and modify the coolant flow when we rebuild. Pistons are usually seized only on the thrust face (which is on the hotter side of the coolant flow on that side whereas the cool coolant hits the thrust side on the 123 side.). Often a ticking sound like a tappet can be heard but is actually the piston tipping and touching the head. I hope that is not the problem. The block is basically the 996 3.4 block (machined slightly differently in some areas) and is therefore likely to gradually go oval until eventually a liner will crack. This ovailty also increases piston blow by and oil consumption. We can both repair a cracked liner and also can re-round the other 5 bores and prevent them going oval again. I really hope your problem is not one of these but thought it worth posting the possibility in case others have similar symptoms now or in the future. Baz
 
Thanks for the in-depth info Baz, although it hurts, it's appreciated to help me prepare my expectations. There is certainly a ticking sound when the engine is idle. It sounds like that could be the problem. I noticed it after the first month of buying it (privately) but didn't think much of it and hoped it was nothing of concern. I have got the car booked into Northway, Reading (indy Porsche mechanic) for a diagnosis and then fix. I'm hoping it will soften the blow of the impending cost by not going to an OPC, but the earliest I could get is June. It's a popular place! Will the engine last that long, as long as I keep it full of oil? Do you know what sort of cost I'm looking at? A few grand I expect!
 
Get them to put a camera down the bores and they should see if it has seized. Fix is a few grand please contact Grant if you want a quotation. Good luck, Baz
 
Yeah, that's what Northway said they will do when I take it for the diagnostic in June. Who is Grant? It's not obvious from the members which one. Thanks.
